Chapter Twenty-One: A Narrow Escape
Corrosive purple liquid meandered across the ground, forming a boiling river of poison that intertwined with neural gas into a rolling mist. Wherever it touched, the rocks hissed with chemical erosion, emitting plumes of acrid white smoke. Lin Yu hoisted the injured A-Jie onto his shoulders. A-Jie let out a muffled groan of agony as warm blood dripped down his pant legs, blooming into dark red flowers upon the spike-covered ground.
The sound of leather combat boots piercing the terrain was like a whisper from death, each step accompanied by a piercing, marrow-deep pain. Behind them, energy beams from the mysterious organization hissed like vipers, grazing their backs and melting smoke-filled holes into the stone walls. The scorching shockwaves whipped their clothes, carrying a pungent, charred stench that made their skin sting from the heat.
"Three o'clock!" Chen Mo’s mechanical prosthetic eye flashed with rapid red light, data streams surging across his lens with a high-pitched hum. He raised his modified ion rifle; the metal frame still held residual heat, and the anti-slip texture on the grip was slick with sweat.
The recoil numbed his shoulder as he pulled the trigger repeatedly. The bullets traced ghostly blue paths through the air, striking a pursuer squarely in the knee. As the liquid-metal combat suit ruptured, fluorescent green fluid sprayed out. The enemy let out an inhuman howl that echoed through the temple corridor, mingling with the faint, eerie wailing within the toxic fog.
Yet, more enemies swarmed from all sides. Their tactical visors glowed with an eerie red light through the poison gas, like the eyes of a wolf pack stalking in the dark. Every beam locked onto its prey, and the energy fluctuations generated by their movement caused the surrounding air to ripple.
Su Yao had already sprinted toward the spacecraft docking point. Her nano-combat suit generated tiny static sparks against the toxic mist, looking like fireflies in the night—or perhaps a desperate distress signal in the dark.
As she leaped onto the boarding ramp, her fingers danced across the touch panel with such speed that they left only blurs, her fingernails clicking against the surface. The ship’s ion shield slowly rose, a pale blue energy barrier acting as a transparent wall that absorbed the shockwaves of the first wave of missile strikes. However, the ripples spreading across the shield, like a lake shattered by thrown stones, showed it was under immense pressure.
"Hurry! The shield won't last three minutes!" Her voice, transmitted through the comms, was laced with palpable anxiety; her words trembled with tension, and her breathing became rapid and heavy.
Lin Yu and his team fought their way through the hail of fire. The explosions of energy beams hitting the ground were deafening, each blast causing the earth to tremble. Old Zhou suddenly gave a grunt; a stray shot grazed his lower leg, instantly staining his combat trousers with a stark, blossoming red.
Gritting his teeth, he knelt on one leg and quickly applied hemostatic spray to the wound. The white foam stanched the bleeding, but the searing pain remained, as if a fire were burning the flesh. "Don't worry about me!" he roared, setting up the quantum entanglement device. His calloused hands held the instrument steady, his knuckles turning white from the strain.
"I’ll cover the retreat!" The high-pitched whine of the device starting up blended with the sounds of enemy fire, creating a tragic, heroic anthem. His eyes burned with resolve, as if he had already accepted the possibility of sacrifice.
Just as Lin Yu was about to board the ship, the leader of the mysterious organization appeared like a phantom at the end of the corridor. The cracks in his mask had spread across his entire face, and purple crystalline veins crawled from his neck toward his eye sockets like evil, creeping vines, rising and falling with his breath. His scepter coalesced a massive energy orb, half a man's height in diameter; the purple light swirling on its surface seemed to hold destructive power, with mysterious symbols flickering faintly within.
"You cannot escape." The leader’s voice was no longer processed by a modulator; instead, it was raspy, like metal grinding against metal. Every word seemed to emanate from the depths of hell, the sound waves causing the surrounding air to vibrate. "Hand over the sphere, and I will leave your bodies intact."
The response was a volley of tracking missiles launched by Su Yao. Three missiles streaked toward the leader, their exhaust flames illuminating the dim corridor, the roar of their engines deafening.
Yet, five meters away, they were swallowed by a purple force field, as if devoured by a giant beast. The "hissing" sound of the field consuming the missiles resembled a monster chewing on its prey. The leader gave a slight wave of his scepter, and the energy orb detonated. The shockwave flipped the ground like a hurricane, sending debris flying—some stones whizzed past the team like bullets.
Lin Yu and the others were knocked to the ground, the spikes carving long, bloody furrows into their bodies. Their combat suits were shredded, and their skin burned with tearing pain. The sphere rolled from Su Yao’s arms, throwing sparks as it skidded across the spike-ridden floor. Each collision made their hearts skip a beat, the sound of the metal sphere grinding against the spikes sharp and harrowing.
In the nick of time, Chen Mo lunged forward. His mechanical eye emitted thick smoke from an overload, and the cooling vents hissed with a charred smell.
The hydraulic systems in his arms groaned under the strain, clicking as if they might shatter at any moment, with green lubricant leaking from the joints. Yet, he clutched the sphere tightly, rolling toward the ship amidst the dense enemy fire. His body was grazed multiple times by energy beams, his nano-suit hanging in tatters and exposing bloodied skin, each wound stinging with fiery pain.
Lin Yu fought through the agony in his eardrums and rushed over to pull Chen Mo up. As their palms met, both could feel the other’s sweat and trembling. The three of them scrambled into the ship as attacks followed in their wake, the energy beams drumming against the hull with a rhythmic "thud-thud."
The moment the hatch closed, an energy beam struck the hull with a harsh, metallic clang, like a giant hammer hitting steel, shaking the entire ship. Su Yao had already bolted to the cockpit, her hands flying across the console, stray locks of hair damp with sweat and plastered to her pale face.
"Engage the curvature engine! Target coordinates..." Before she could finish, the ship shuddered violently—the mysterious organization’s pursuit fleet had caught up in space. Outside the porthole, dense swarms of enemy ships looked like black locusts. The laser beams they fired wove a red web of death across space, staining the starfield blood-red, with faint afterimages lingering in the wake of the lasers.
Lin Yu shoved the sphere into the custom energy compartment. The sound of the metal door locking was crisp and heavy, like the closing of a gate of fate. He turned to assist Chen Mo in activating the defense systems; both men left sweat-stained marks on the control panel, forming small pools of moisture on the console.
As the first wave of enemy missiles closed in, the ship's point-defense system spat fire, detonating countless brilliant sparks in space like festive fireworks—though they carried lethal danger. The shockwave from the explosions made the ship sway.
But the enemy fire grew increasingly dense. The energy readings for the ion shield dropped at a visible rate, the red warning digits flickering constantly, each jump tightening the nerves of those on board.
"We won't last at this rate!" Lin Yu shouted, his voice nearly drowned out by the alarms. "We must perform a space jump!"
"The coordinates haven't been calibrated yet!" Su Yao’s voice trembled. Sweat from her forehead dripped onto the control panel, splashing into tiny puddles, and her fingers slipped as she swiped across the screen.
"The jump might tear us into atoms!" Yet, a pursuit beam from behind struck the ship's stabilizer, causing the hull to tilt sharply. Indicators on the dashboard flashed wildly, and alarms wailed like the knell of doomsday.
In this life-or-death moment, Lin Yu pulled up the star chart data obtained in the temple and rapidly entered the coordinates. His fingertips flew across the screen, his eyes locked on the data, fearing the slightest error. "Take the gamble! Now!"
Su Yao gritted her teeth and pressed the jump button. The space around the ship began to warp, light stretching into bizarre shapes. The pursuing enemy ships blurred in the distorted light, like reflections in water or a phantom dream.
Just as an energy beam was about to strike again, the ship transformed into a streak of blue light and vanished into the cosmos, leaving only the furious roar of the mysterious organization’s leader echoing in the void—a roar filled with resentment and hatred.
Yet, they all knew this escape was far from over. No one knew what dangerous territory they would arrive at after the jump, or what harsher challenges awaited them. Every slight vibration of the ship felt like the heartbeat of an unknown fate.
