Chapter Seven: Infiltration of the Base
The spaceship hung motionless like a dormant mechanical beast, suspended silently in the shadow of meteoroids at the edge of the asteroid belt. Its metallic hull gleamed with a cold, steely luster under the pale blue starlight, as if poised to strike at any moment. Inside the cabin, a holographic projection deconstructed the base’s layout into a flowing river of blue light. Shadows flickered across the walls like countless shimmering ghosts, lending the cramped space an eerie mystery and an undercurrent of unease.
Su Yao’s tactical pen traced a piercing red line across the virtual wall. As the tip touched the interface, a faint but sharp electric buzz echoed through the sealed cabin like a serpent’s flickering tongue. The interplay of light and shadow carved sharp angles along her resolute jawline. Her eyes were cold and hawk-like, fixed intently on the base structure within the projection. Her brow furrowed tightly, beads of sweat forming on her forehead. Her voice was as cold and sharp as a blade forged in ice: “According to thermal imaging, the energy core lies three levels underground. In 48 minutes, the energy flux will trigger the quantum-encrypted self-destruction protocol. At that point, all data will dissolve into indecipherable quantum foam.” Each word cut through the air with lethal precision, intensifying the heavy atmosphere. Everyone’s breathing grew involuntarily rapid.
Lin Yu clipped a miniature device to his waist. Its metal casing still radiated the warmth of his palm, faintly heating like a ticking time bomb. This latest invention from the Temporal Management Bureau could simulate energy fluctuations of twelve different civilizations. Yet facing a base fused with technology from seven temporal dimensions, he understood that this was merely a roll of the dice in a perilous quantum casino—success uncertain and stakes deadly.
The device’s indicator light flickered dimly, wavering like a silent mocking breath toward his inner unease. His fingers instinctively brushed its surface, seeking a fragment of reassurance. From the corner of his eye, he saw Chen Mo stabbing a syringe into his arm. The pale blue nanorepair fluid coursed through his veins like an icy stream, sketching strange patterns beneath the skin. This could only temporarily suppress the crystalline veins spreading beneath his flesh—silver filaments flickering like a living galaxy beneath his pallid skin, reminiscent of countless tiny worms writhing. Each pulse tightened his nerves further. Chen Mo clenched his jaw, muscles taut, sweat beading at his temple. The sting of the repair fluid made his body tremble slightly, as if enduring immense pain. His Adam’s apple bobbed as he fought to suppress discomfort.
“Activate phase camouflage,” Su Yao commanded crisply, her tone absolute and commanding. At her words, their battle suits shimmered with rippling waves like stones cast into a lake, sending concentric ripples outward. The team’s figures vanished into the shadows of the asteroid field, swallowed by darkness as if they had never existed. Whenever a patrol robot’s searchlight swept past, Lin Yu quickly activated his device, projecting false energy whirlpools into the void. Sweat trickled down his cheeks, dripping onto his suit.
Once, a cold mechanical eye nearly pressed against his visor. In the reflection of its lens, his wildly dilated pupils resembled a trapped beast’s, filled with terror and tension. The robot’s metal shell gleamed coldly; as its spotlight passed over Lin Yu’s camo suit, mottled patterns of light and shadow danced across it. He could almost feel the robot’s frigid breath. His heart nearly stopped; every breath was cautious, fearful of making the slightest noise.
The base’s outer wall was a living metal forest of nanodefense nets. Each vine bristled with bioelectric sensors, trembling subtly in the darkness as if alive. Lin Yu’s sonic cutter released a ghostly blue blade, slicing through the net. Instantly, the metal vines contracted into spiked iron spheres, emitting shrill alarms like a newborn’s cry. The piercing sound echoed through the silent void of space, chilling the soul as if trapped in a terrifying abyss.
“They’re learning the frequency! Charge!” Su Yao’s voice crackled urgently over the comms, distorted with static, her tone strained and desperate. As the team surged forward in single file, the breach behind them healed swiftly, closing like a living wound as if they had never been there.
The nanovines shrank with an agonizing metallic screech, the defense net knitting itself back together with astonishing speed, seeming to possess a will of its own. The team could not help but feel powerless before such a strange and formidable system.
Inside, the base reeked of a strange blend of ozone and decayed organic matter—a pungent stench like burnt circuit boards soaked in ancient moss that made one nauseous. Lin Yu’s device trembled violently, emitting a low, urgent alarm. The streaming data on its screen revealed that the spatial structure here had twisted into a Klein bottle form—every seemingly straight corridor looped back to its origin.
Su Yao pressed a locator beacon against the wall, but its red dot overlapped strangely on the holographic map, as if the entire base was swallowing spatial coordinates. They found themselves trapped in an endless maze with no exit. The light points on the map flickered mockingly, heightening their confusion and anxiety. Each step was taken with utmost caution, afraid to plunge deeper into the labyrinth.
“Silence!” Chen Mo suddenly hissed, his voice tense and alert as he tensed like a drawn bow. In the darkness, a dozen spider-like patrol robots emitted sonic waves, scanning the ground. The ghostly blue glow flowing through their joints resonated eerily with the mysterious crystals embedded in the ruins.
Lin Yu held his breath, afraid even to breathe. His heart pounded wildly in his chest, threatening to burst free. He watched as the nearest robot’s mechanical foot scraped close to his boot tip, sparks flying from metal grinding against the floor, rippling faintly across his phase camouflage like miniature fireworks blooming in darkness.
The robots’ sonic scans hissed like vipers’ tongues, echoing through the silent corridors. Lin Yu could even feel the subtle tremors of sound waves brushing against his skin. Each vibration tightened his nerves, fearing discovery at any moment. His body froze in place, unwilling to move an inch.
When they finally reached the data center, the quantum server matrix hummed softly, whispering like countless souls murmuring in the dark. The sound was low and eerie, as if summoning from another world.
The moment Su Yao inserted the neural connector into the port, the entire wall of screens flared with a crimson glow, as though the space had been stained with fresh blood, sending chills down the spine.
“The encryption protocol is rewriting!”
Her pupils reflected the frenzied lines of code dancing wildly. Her fingers flew over the virtual keyboard in a blur, her expression focused and tense. Veins throbbed at her temples, sweat dripping steadily onto the virtual screen before her.
“Lin Yu! Maximum power interference!”
As the neural connector made contact, tiny sparks leapt out. Su Yao concentrated fiercely, battling the frantically rewriting encryption. She knew the outcome hinged on this moment—every second was critical.
But it was already too late.
The alarm blared like metal tearing apart, shattering the base with its piercing screech. The ceiling cracked in a web of fractures as hundreds of micro-drones poured down, their laser targeting arrays weaving deadly grids across the floor.
Lin Yu saw the crystalline veins under Chen Mo’s skin suddenly surge, outlining a serpentine totem glowing with eerie light, as if awakened by some malevolent force. Su Yao’s shock cannon overloaded, spewing blue-purple flames that turned the incoming drones into burning showers of debris.
Laser beams scorched black marks on the walls. Explosions sent shockwaves that toppled nearby equipment, while shards arced dangerously through the smoke-choked chaos. The data center descended into a blazing inferno, thick smoke obscuring all vision.
“Scatter and break through!” Su Yao’s command was splintered by the blasts, her voice filled with despair and defiance. Lin Yu sprinted toward a ventilation shaft etched vividly in his memory. Behind him, the mechanical troops’ footsteps fell in unison like the drums of death, each step pounding on his heart, quickening his pulse.
As he dove into the duct, out of the corner of his eye he caught a glimpse of a shadow wearing a serpentine mask at the corner—its crystalline veins pulsing in sync with the silver filaments beneath Chen Mo’s skin. Strange and mysterious.
The metal walls of the shaft were icy cold, his breath forming frost within the tunnel. The eerie figure at the bend sent a chill down his spine, as if unseen eyes were locked onto him. He knew the danger was far from over. A greater crisis awaited just beyond the shadows.
