Chapter 25: The Human Emperor's Challenge

The angels below hummed hymns of praise, their voices swelling like thunder.
The sky split open. A colossal figure drifted amid the chaos, its body seeming to stretch across ten million miles. The grandeur of its form was enough to leave all who beheld it stunned.
Majestic.
Colossal.
Boundless.
“The Creator...”
Every living thing gazed at the figure in the heavens, as though seeing its own fate.
It was the ultimate beauty, containing both destruction and eternity.
A vast, intricate, chaotic force—an amalgamation of the wills left behind throughout history by countless creatures—crashed into the minds of the angels. It became an endless torrent of information, and then transformed into the being’s litany:
“Mysterious Source of Heaven and Earth, root of all vital breath, cultivated through myriad tribulations...”
...
“Unseen when gazed upon, unheard when listened for, embracing heaven and earth, nurturing all living things...”
...
“Primordial Beginning, pacify and secure; proclaim to all spirits, divine officials of mountains and rivers, numinous spirits of the soil...”
It was as though countless ancient beings of the past were whispering ceaselessly beside their ears.
As though the entire world were praying.
They were soil, sand, stone, wind, rain, insects, birds, and swimming fish—the mingled wills of all things, dead and living alike, gathering into a vast flood.
At that moment, every living thing felt as though the very source of the world had descended.
That figure came down from the heavens, bearing within it a path leading toward ultimate truth.
And in the next instant, it seemed to look past the armies and emperors beneath it with utter indifference before gradually receding into the distance, leaving only two divine objects to fall into the mortal world.
That figure...
It was leaving!
The cold indifference hanging above them like something that had existed since time immemorial caused the same thought to arise in every heart:
“We have been ignored!”
“So that is... the god who sent down those divine objects?”
“No reaction... unseen when gazed upon, unheard when listened for?”
“Perhaps, in its eyes, our cries are no different from the wind in nature.”
“Our energy levels are too low. We cannot even draw its attention.”
“The greatest contempt is to be ignored.”
“Yes. Yes.”
One angel murmured softly:
“Would you care about the stream flowing beside the road, simply because it makes a sound? Would you care about the rain falling beside the road? In its eyes, we are merely part of nature, no different from stones rolling along the roadside.”
The Angel King’s entire body trembled. His eyes quivered, and his wings shook.
The Angel King said coldly, “We cannot communicate? We do not even know what it is... Then let us try attacking it.”
“After all, an existence capable of destroying entire eras will most likely destroy us in the future.”
At last, the Angel King, Worm Thirteen, transformed his terror into fury.
“Good! Then we may return to those days.”
The Cherub who had lost his child in years past also grew excited. He remembered that blazing era when they had fought shoulder to shoulder, campaigning together against the long-necked dragons.
“Form ranks!”
The Angel King commanded the legions on every side. Their psychic energies synchronized and transformed into a storm of white bones, shooting straight toward the heavens.
“Burn!”
In the next instant, countless angels activated the technique borrowed from the Firmament Tree—“Love Too Deep for Long Life.” The entire race transformed into enormous burning mushroom bombs, radiating a faint, sacred white light.
Burn!
Become butterflies!
Countless holy, pure psychic energies converged upon the Angel King, as though constructing a colossal energy angel destined to exist between heaven and earth for only a fleeting moment.
This was a battle in which they burned their very lives. The veterans who had followed the Angel King in conquest across the world had never intended to return.

They had rehearsed this battle long ago.
The pupils high in the sky were like the sun and moon. They turned slightly, as though at last taking notice of the scene below.
Yet that mysterious eternal existence merely paused for a second. Like a natural hurricane that suddenly arrived and vanished, it slowly dissolved from the world.
“Ignored. Still ignored!”
In the next instant, Worm Thirteen condensed the psychic fluctuations born from the burning lives of every angel soldier, and his body swelled countless times over.
He was like a giant who had opened the heavens, his will surging outward.
“Not enough. Still not enough.”
“Since you are nature, then our angelic civilization shall continue to conquer nature!”
He paused, and the corner of his mouth split into a faint smile.
“I have it.”
“Thirty-eight thousand angels—all breaking their cocoons, gathering the fire of civilization, butterflies flying into the flames...”
“Receive my sword!”
The countless bone spines of the angels surged like a mighty river of stars, transforming into a dazzling colossal sword of white bones that blazed across heaven and earth.
This sword feared neither life nor death. It advanced without hesitation.
And in that instant, the old generals of that bygone era could no longer withstand the suction of “Love Too Deep for Long Life.” One after another, they fell.
Below, the angelic historians continued recording.
Seraphim, dead.
Thrones, dead.
Wheels, dead.
Cherubim, dead.
Archangel, dead.
...
“Good! Good!”
Watching one old friend after another march toward a glorious finale, Worm Thirteen laughed aloud.
“They should die on the battlefield. They must not live on in solitude. Let us die with dignity, together.”
In an instant of ultimate combustion, the aged emperor poured the deep affection, suppressed sorrow, guilt, and suspicion he had carried for countless years into a single stroke of his sword.
Tears slipped unconsciously from the corners of Worm Thirteen’s eyes and fell upon Love Too Deep for Long Life. Strangely, they merged with it perfectly.
The restless nights of half a lifetime, the torment, the sleepless suffering, the deepest repression and pain—all of it resonated with the power of Love Too Deep for Long Life, completely fusing that innate gift into his body.
Before the astonished eyes of every angel, an unbelievable scene unfolded.
A new god was born!
The aura of following nature suddenly broke through. It finally shattered the bottleneck that had bound him for an entire lifetime and stepped into the Third Stage.
“Love too deep brings no longevity; wisdom too keen brings its own ruin.” The Angel King murmured, “That was the first half of my life... But now it has all died. What use is becoming a god?”
All the angels, butterflies, and other races gazed at the majestic Angel King.
This would be...
The third god.
