Chapter 25: Let Me Take Her Place
"Cancel it outright?" Lu Meng couldn't help but ask.
Marta sighed, "For now, that's the only option. There haven’t been any available guides to cover the shifts lately."
Lu Meng asked again, "When she recovers, can she make up for the missed sessions with the sentinels? I heard that to get a session with our military district sentinels, you have to scramble for a spot..."
Getting a slot must mean waiting for an unknown length of time.
Marta shook her head, "No, they can only make appointments starting next month."
Lu Meng was silent for a moment, then said, "Chief Guide, I'll take her place. I happen to be free. Besides, didn’t you want me to get more practice? This would kill two birds with one stone."
Marta was initially taken aback but then pondered for a moment.
Actually, that wasn’t impossible.
Her official independent guidance wouldn’t start until next month anyway, so this would serve as early practice.
"However, wait here for a moment..."
"Alright."
Lu Meng didn’t ask what she was up to and just watched her leave the room.
...
Military District Conference Room.
The room was filled with three to four dozen top commanders: Major Generals leading elite squads, Lieutenant Generals overseeing various district sectors, along with the Deputy General and the General of the military district.
The Major General of the Third Squad spoke first. Their squad’s sentinel spirits were avian creatures responsible for relaying critical external communications for the military district.
"General, the planetary monitor detected Zerg activity on the border planet. The nearest Ninth Military District has already dispatched Major General Corley with his sentinels. This morning, we received word that the Ninth Military District reported losing contact with Corley and his squad."
General Sair frowned deeply. "Lost contact?"
The Ninth Military District was located on a tertiary imperial star, quite a distance away. Even if he wanted to support them, there was nothing he could do.
After a moment of thought, Sair ordered, "Keep tracking the situation. Report any updates to me immediately."
"Understood."
The meeting ended, and everyone began to leave.
Wen Er was originally following the Lieutenant General out when he suddenly heard the General’s voice over the communicator.
"Are you certain she used her psychic power?"
"Alright, then I’ll send someone else over."
His eyes flickered, and his pace slowed.
Sair looked around and met Wen Er’s gaze.
He recalled that Wen Er was the one who had gone to retrieve the person last time, and he had a hand in bringing her back.
Waving him over, he said, "Come here."
Then he waved at the others, "Dismissed. I have some business with him."
Although puzzled, the others quickly left without lingering.
Wen Er hurried over, "General!"
Sair said, "I have a task for you. You remember the young guide you brought back last time, Lu Meng?"
Wen Er’s eyes shifted slightly, but his face remained calm. "Yes, I remember."
"She’s currently in Guide Room Three, preparing to conduct independent mental guidance sessions these days. I want you to supervise her. Primarily, observe if there’s anything unusual about her mental guidance. Secondly, after the sessions, arrange for the sentinels she guides to undergo mental evaluations. Send the results to Elt."
"Yes, General."
...
Marta returned, and the moment Lu Meng saw her, her eyes lit up.
Seeing Lu Meng’s nervousness, Marta smiled.
"Good! You can take over Daisy’s mental guidance sessions."
Lu Meng was delighted but then hesitated, "But if my psychic ability doesn’t have much effect on their guidance..."
Marta reassured her, "That’s alright."
Lu Meng exhaled in relief, "That’s a relief."
