Chapter Thirteen: Our History
13. Our History
“Let’s continue from where we left off, Administrator. We need cohesion,” said sociologist Norris Barry.
“You mean we need a title? That’s something I have been considering,” Tang Xiao nodded.
“Not just a title, but a history as well!”
“History? What kind of history?”
“Our history—your history, everyone’s history! And it must be a grand history! Only then will each person stand tall and proud between heaven and earth,” Norris replied. “Moreover, past history shapes present values, which is an incredibly important guiding principle.”
“Can’t we just build those values step by step now?” Tang Xiao asked.
Norris shook his head. “That’s not nearly enough, because you cannot control what happens in the present or the challenges we face. But history—that is something controllable.”
Tang Xiao suddenly understood. “You mean you want me to fabricate a history?”
“That is absolutely necessary, Administrator,” Norris leaned in close, lowering his voice. “No one wants to be someone without origins. Everyone treasures their memories of the past; those are the most precious things. So since we no longer have a past, we must create one.”
Tang Xiao nodded and leaned back, deep in thought. After a moment, he opened his eyes and said to Norris, “I have a preliminary plan we can discuss. I’ll awaken some people to help you.”
He selected five writers and five sociologists from the awakening list, all ordinary citizens but sufficient for now. He then established the Department of Socio-Cultural Affairs with Norris Barry at its helm and handed them the plan to organize and fabricate this history.
That afternoon, Tang Xiao visited Guan Yan’s department to observe tests of the infrared laser weapon. The trial was a success—the laser weapon destroyed the target drone at a distance of 20 kilometers.
This laser weapon’s power far exceeded the basic electromagnetic cannons used on current Blade-class fighters and Arrow-class reconnaissance planes. Moreover, its energy supply was directly connected to the engine’s power source, eliminating the need for separate ammunition storage.
Once equipped with this weapon, even the Blade-class fighters, despite their flaws, would gain a fighting chance.
Next, Dr. Guan Yan would lead her team to upgrade the production lines inside the mothership to mass-produce and equip the infrared laser weapons. This would take roughly a week.
Afterward, Tang Xiao attended a temporary classroom to study the Galactic Standard Language. The instructors were Dubrak, Kunto, and their group, including Vunte and some newly appointed teachers from the Education Department.
Since arriving in this Star Wars universe, language learning had become a priority for Tang Xiao. Henceforth, every citizen’s compulsory course would be Galactic Standard Language—it was mandatory.
The Galactic Standard Language was not difficult to understand; it bore many similarities to English from Tang Xiao’s previous life, both being alphabetic languages with relatively simple pronunciation. Coupled with Tang Xiao’s awakened Force abilities—perhaps the Force sharpened his mind—his learning progress was rapid, unlike his average English skills before.
A sharp mind is truly invaluable.
Otherwise, how could he have conceived such brilliant ideas like generating power from sewage and building the massive “Dung Dam”?
The next day, Norris Barry and the entire Socio-Cultural Department, all sporting dark circles from an all-nighter, brought a proposal to Tang Xiao.
The Fourth Civilization Plan!
They found Tang Xiao’s initial proposal feasible and expanded it into a complete historical narrative.
In this history, somewhere in the fourth arm of a certain galaxy, within a star system called Sol, a dazzling and glorious civilization arose—the Earth Civilization.
Earth Civilization was immensely powerful, once occupying at least a quarter of their galaxy.
However, its fortunes soon turned. A nearly perfected insectoid species suddenly appeared, spreading slaughter, breeding, and expansion, wreaking havoc across the galaxy. Earth Civilization took the lead, forming an alliance with other galactic civilizations to wage a century-long war against the insectoid menace.
After tremendous losses—population reduced by 70%, numerous industrial planets destroyed—the last nest of the Void Demons was finally eradicated, and peace returned to the galaxy. Earth Civilization then led the remnants in rebuilding their homes.
The insectoid invasion was called the First Cataclysm, marking the First Era.
During reconstruction, to compensate for the massive population loss, Earth Civilization began extensively employing robots and artificial intelligence. As AI evolved, these robots developed emotions and creativity, exacerbating tensions between organic and inorganic species.
Yet disaster followed. A mysterious signal from the Void opened the gateway to the Second Cataclysm. This signal came from an ancient AI known as the Purge Protocol, intent on annihilating all galactic civilizations.
Under the Purge Protocol’s influence, robots and synthetics rebelled en masse, igniting a galaxy-wide war with Earth Civilization once again at the forefront.
The war seemed hopeless at times, but Earth Civilization discovered an ancient civilization’s hyperspace core. By analyzing it, they developed hyperspace jump technology that no longer relied on hyperspace lanes but allowed direct jumps.
With this super technology, Earth Civilization’s final fleet teleported directly to the mechanical planet where the Purge Protocol resided, utterly destroying it and ending the war.
The Purge Protocol invasion was the Second Cataclysm, marking the Second Era.
Yet prosperity was short-lived. Due to improper use of the hyperspace core, a high-dimensional entity called “Shabanash” slipped through a temporal rift into the galaxy.
The galaxy, already battered, mounted a last stand under Earth Civilization’s leadership but ultimately fell. All civilizations were destroyed; Earth was shattered, and the last fleet wiped out.
In the end, Earth Civilization built a mothership using the hyperspace core, placing the last embers of civilization—the technology archives, talent repositories, and embryo banks—aboard. They then executed the longest, randomly targeted jump, arriving here.
The invasion of the high-dimensional beings was the Third Cataclysm, marking the Third Era.
Reading this grand “history,” Tang Xiao could not help but applaud. The fabricated history was superb—logically coherent, vividly told, and rich with heroic tales: the spiritual leader of the Star Elves commanding the final fleet, the heroic sergeant delaying the insectoid siege of Zhiyuan Star, the commander Shepard sacrificing himself against the Purge Protocol fleet...
Most importantly, Tang Xiao’s own lineage was the leader of Earth Civilization’s resistance against the cataclysms!
Compared to this magnificent historic narrative, the so-called “Mirror Lord’s” writings were utterly trivial!
Furthermore, this explained why the mothership’s technology archives contained a vast array of technologies from diverse civilizations—because they originally belonged to different galactic cultures who entrusted their last hopes to Earth Civilization. Of course, this detail could not be publicly recorded in history books lest it attract endless covetousness.
“This history fabrication—no, restoration—is excellent. You still need to refine details and synthesize historical materials. I leave that work to you,” Tang Xiao said, continuing to peruse the documents. Yet the smile on his face gradually became strange, and suddenly he looked up at Norris Barry with an unsettling grin.
“Ad... Administrator, is there a problem with these materials?”
“Of course there is a problem. And... it’s a big one,” Tang Xiao responded slowly.
