Chapter Sixteen: The Lioness Battles the Hyenas

In truth, Nila’s decision to launch a surprise attack on the lion pride was born out of desperation. The hyena clan had gone many days without a successful hunt. The dry season was especially harsh for them, making survival a constant struggle.

Nila’s clan also had over a dozen cubs to feed, all demanding a large quantity of food each day. But the vast savannah during the drought offered few large herds of grazing animals for them to prey upon.

Determined to ensure her clan’s survival, Nila had no choice but to risk attacking the lions. She understood the danger of such an act, yet survival meant taking risks.

That morning, Gik had gone south to patrol the territory, providing Nila with the perfect opportunity.

Though two lionesses remained to guard the ten cubs, Nila did not regard Lissa and Aisha as formidable obstacles.

With seventeen hyenas against two lionesses, the odds were overwhelmingly in their favor.

Seizing the moment, Nila led her pack in a swift assault on Gik’s pride’s cubs.

The fur on Lissa and Aisha’s backs bristled with alarm.

Both were seasoned lionesses, having faced hyenas many times over the years. They knew all too well the cunning, treacherous, and ruthless nature of these creatures.

“Roar!” they both growled.

Seeing so many hyenas charging toward them, they immediately grasped the attackers’ intent.

They quickly ushered the nine cubs into the thicket for safety.

Meanwhile, Chuye had climbed high into a tree. Lissa called out a few times, unable to spot him at first. Chuye responded from above, and seeing him there brought her some relief.

After securing the cubs, Lissa and Aisha took the offensive.

Against these cruel and vicious foes, the lionesses had no choice but to fight with all their might. Only by matching their brutality could they hope to fend them off.

Nila was equally determined. Upon spotting the two lionesses rushing toward her pack, she swiftly commanded the hyenas to encircle them.

Seventeen hyenas versus two lionesses—a fierce battle was about to erupt.

Under Nila’s leadership, the hyenas launched a powerful attack.

Lissa and Aisha were soon surrounded. At first, they fought side by side, but the hyenas quickly split them apart. Nila directed her pack to encircle each lioness individually.

Seven or eight hyenas swarmed a single lioness—a daunting fight for either.

Though hyenas were smaller than lions, their strength lay in numbers. Led by their queen, they moved as a formidable wall, overwhelming their opponents with relentless force.

The ferocity of the hyenas shone brightest when battling lions. Individually not very strong, their combined might was astonishing.

Lissa and Aisha fought with all their strength but struggled to overcome so many hyenas. Fortunately, they had just feasted on prey caught the previous night, which gave them some stamina for the fight.

Had they been starving, they wouldn’t have lasted long against the pack.

Even so, victory was unlikely. Their only hope rested on the return of the male lion to drive these detestable attackers away.

Unbeknownst to him, a grave crisis had erupted at home. For days, his focus had been on warding off wandering rival males that frequently harassed the pride, never suspecting another threat.

He diligently patrolled his territory, chasing off any intruding males.

Meanwhile, Lissa and Aisha faced extreme peril, and the cubs were in the greatest danger.

Chuye knew he himself was safe. Even if these hyenas defeated the two lionesses and preyed on the cubs, he would remain unharmed.

Perched in the tree, the hyenas, however fierce, could not scale its heights to reach him.

But Chuye could not simply watch this disaster unfold. As a member of the pride, he felt compelled to act.

He pondered how best to assist his mother and aunt, both in dire straits.

If the male lion did not return soon, neither the cubs nor the two lionesses would likely survive.

For the hyenas, this was a moment of triumph, especially for Queen Nila. She believed her decision was sound and that she would defeat the two lionesses.

Even if they failed to kill the lionesses outright, the cubs were surely doomed to become their prey, ensuring a plentiful feast.

The situation grew more desperate by the moment, and the male lion remained absent. Lissa and Aisha were reduced to mere defense, unable to mount any counterattack.

“I must hurry down to help Mom and Auntie. Otherwise, they’ll be finished,” Chuye resolved.

He swiftly descended the tree.

Facing the hyenas, frenzied and devilish in their assault, a small lion cub bravely charged forward.

The pack, engrossed in battle with the lionesses, did not notice his arrival.

Lissa and Aisha were now individually encircled by the hyenas, and the distance between the two had grown.

Chuye had observed the scene and noticed that the cluster of hyenas attacking his mother was near a thicket known to harbor killer bees.

He devised a plan: if he could lure his mother and the hyenas toward that thicket, they could use the bees as a weapon against the attackers.

Seizing this opportunity, Chuye climbed down and hurried toward his mother.

Lissa was locked in battle with seven or eight hyenas, unaware that Chuye dared to descend from the tree.

Previously, Chuye’s courage had been inspired by the presence of only one or two rival males, whom he could harass and repel with the aid of killer bees.

But now, facing a dozen or more hyenas, his old tactics might not suffice.
