Chapter Fifty: Hunting the Little Stray Dog
Chapter Fifty: Hunting Wild Dog Pups
The den of this pack of wild dogs lay on a small mound. Scattered across the mound were several burrows where the pups could live and hide from danger.
The pups were outside playing, accompanied by several subadult females.
Chu Ye felt that if he approached the mound slowly, he would have a chance to kill one of the pups.
I must avenge Maomao. You hunted one of our lion cubs, so I will hunt one of your pups.
With that resolve in his heart, Chu Ye prepared to launch a surprise attack. He felt that if he rushed over, he could kill one of the pups.
But just as he was about to charge, a young honey badger suddenly ran past him. When it spotted Chu Ye, it began shrieking.
The young honey badger had been foraging outside. After seeing Chu Ye, it decided to treat him as prey.
The sight of it immediately infuriated Chu Ye. His carefully planned attack seemed about to be ruined by this honey badger.
He lunged at it and bit down.
The young honey badger did not take Chu Ye seriously. In its eyes, a lion cub was nothing to fear. It was not even afraid of adult lions, let alone a cub.
But Chu Ye was no ordinary lion cub. His attacking power was no weaker than that of an adult lioness.
The young honey badger had clearly overestimated itself by daring to attack him. Furious, Chu Ye engaged it in combat.
The honey badger was itself only subadult, and it was not until it fought Chu Ye that it realized how formidable he was.
It was defeated in short order.
Seeing that it could not beat Chu Ye, the young honey badger turned and fled.
The den of the wild dogs lay directly ahead.
It seemed that, unable to defeat Chu Ye, the honey badger intended to ambush the wild dog pups instead.
Damn it, it’s trying to steal my meal. How could I possibly let it go?
When Chu Ye saw the honey badger rush over and bite at the pups, he charged after it.
The pups and several subadult female wild dogs had been playing beside their den. They never imagined that a young honey badger would suddenly appear, followed by a lion cub.
The mound erupted into chaos.
Some of the pups were so terrified that they no longer knew where to run, darting about in every direction. When the subadult females saw predators attacking their pups, they immediately engaged both the honey badger and Chu Ye.
The wild dogs could not understand how a honey badger and a lion cub had suddenly appeared together to attack their pups. It was likely something they had never encountered before.
Even so, the subadult females did not regard Chu Ye or the honey badger as serious threats. After all, both were juveniles, and neither was as large as the female wild dogs.
The females threw themselves into battle with Chu Ye and the honey badger.
Chu Ye could have defeated the subadult wild dogs, but he had no desire to become entangled with them. His target was the pups.
If the females kept him occupied, however, he might not be able to break away quickly enough to attack the terrified pups.
Fortunately, Chu Ye now had an ally. The honey badger had unintentionally become his helper.
The subadult females could not cope with two invading animals at once. The honey badger alone was enough to keep them busy. After all, honey badgers were extraordinarily fierce fighters.
Thus, the honey badger created an opportunity for Chu Ye to ambush the pups.
Seeing that the females were focused entirely on fighting the honey badger, Chu Ye fixed his eyes on one of the pups and sprang forward.
Though the pup was already several months old, it was utterly helpless before Chu Ye’s superior strength. He subdued it in a single move.
Chu Ye clamped his jaws around the pup’s neck and carried it toward a nearby thicket.
Chu Ye clamped his jaws around the pup’s neck and carried it toward a nearby thicket.
The subadult wild dogs did not notice what he was doing. They were locked in combat with the honey badger and had no idea that a lion cub had stolen one of their pups.
Carrying the pup in his jaws, Chu Ye ran toward the lions’ territory.
The subadult wild dogs never imagined that Chu Ye would carry off one of their pups. After the honey badger was defeated by them, it fled.
Only then did the females think to check on the pups. When they looked, they discovered that one was missing.
They began searching everywhere for it. But Chu Ye had already killed the pup and carried it away. There was no point in searching for it any longer.
Meanwhile, Chu Ye continued running toward his pride’s territory with the pup in his jaws.
Before long, he returned to his own territory.
Lisa and Aisha had not yet returned from hunting. The lion cubs were running back and forth beneath the great tree, while the male lion had gone to patrol his territory.
With the pup in his mouth, Chu Ye approached the cubs.
They had been playing, but the moment they saw him, astonishment spread across their faces. None of them could understand why Chu Ye was carrying a wild dog pup.
He brought the pup before them and dropped it at their feet.
The cubs stared at the dead pup, suddenly tense and uncertain what to do.
When Chu Ye realized that they still did not understand why he had brought it back, he simply began eating it.
He tore open the pup’s belly in one bite and started devouring its organs.
Once the other cubs saw Chu Ye eating the pup, they joined him.
Just then, Lisa and Aisha returned from the hunt.
They had caught nothing. To make matters worse, every one of them had been injured.
