Unable to overhear the conversation between the Duan brothers and seeing no further action from Zhang Su, Zheng Xinyu crouched down and stealthily peeked around the corner, surprised to find two men crouching behind the iron gate, whispering anxiously.

After a moment, Zheng Xinyu saw the two men open the door and step out, their sneaky, hunched posture almost comical.

“Brother Su, why aren’t we going with them?” Zheng Xinyu stood up and asked softly.

“Have you already forgotten what happened with Brother Xiang? Do you know if they’re human or monsters?” Zhang Su replied, listening carefully for any sounds.

“I… Brother Su, look, they should be survivors from downstairs. In all these days, they haven’t come upstairs to scavenge for supplies, nor taken anything from anyone’s home. People like that probably aren’t dangerous, right?” Zheng Xinyu analyzed logically.

Zhang Su was slightly taken aback but nodded in agreement. “You’re right. Even if they’re not bad people, we can’t be sure they won’t see us as monsters. Caution is mutual.”

Without solid assurance, Zhang Su had no intention of rashly teaming up with others. Besides, he found the timid voice suspicious!

Zheng Xinyu and Zhong Xiaoshan nodded in agreement, feeling Zhang Su’s point was valid. In times like these, zombies are certainly dangerous, but other humans aren’t necessarily safe either. Everyone is alert, so misunderstandings and conflicts are inevitable.

Better to focus energy on fighting zombies than internal strife!

“They’ll definitely try to start the vehicle. We wait here!”

Zhang Su didn’t dare approach the gate recklessly, fearing the two men might get into trouble and return followed by a horde of zombies. They stood quietly around the stairwell corner.

The narrow dark hallway carried the faint stench of decay into their nostrils. Waiting was a necessary skill that needed to be mastered thoroughly.

After checking the time, five minutes passed with no unusual sound. Zhang Su relaxed slightly and whispered, “Follow me. The usual—no noise!”

The three moved slowly behind the iron gate. Zhang Su pressed his ear against it and suddenly heard wood hitting the ground followed by a hysterical scream.

“Xiao Hai, run!”

Zhang Su’s heart dropped sharply. He instinctively wanted to lock the door but withdrew his hand and instead shoved Zheng Xinyu and Zhong Xiaoshan forward. “They’ve been discovered, run!”

“Ah?”

Startled, Zheng Xinyu followed Zhang Su upstairs in confusion. “Where are we running to?”

If given time, Zheng Xinyu might have planned better, but in this perilous environment, there was rarely time to think—quick wit or having plans B, C, and D ready was essential.

“Out of the unit, head to Building 4, Unit 1!”

Zhang Su ran up the stairs rapidly, standing behind the unit door and peering outside through the blood-stained glass. He didn’t know whether to feel relieved or frustrated.

A large horde of zombies had gathered beneath the burning Unit 2, which reduced pressure on their side significantly. But if not for that explosion, they wouldn’t have had to flee for their lives!

The howling of zombies from underground grew louder.

With a breath, Zhang Su pushed open the unit door. A cold wind blew in, rustling the week-old dirt from his hair.

He couldn’t remember the last time he’d stood at the unit entrance. Usually, he’d take the elevator home straight from underground, coming and going by car. Roughly counting, it must have been over half a month ago when he picked up a package at the community’s delivery point.

The swarm of zombies ran wildly, their stench overwhelming. The sky was gloomy, the ground littered with trash, severed limbs, bloodstains, shattered glass, collapsed buildings, and charred walls.

If any film crew wanted to shoot a post-apocalyptic movie, filming in Shengqin Homeland would save a fortune on special effects!

For a moment, Zhang Su felt his brain flooded with countless pieces of information as if time itself slowed down.

Bang!

At that moment, the underground gate was kicked open and the two brothers fled in panic, followed by a long line of zombies!

“Let’s go, Brother Su! Weren’t we heading to that building?”

Zheng Xinyu stepped out of the unit door, seeing Zhang Su frozen, and hurriedly nudged him.

Snapping back to reality, Zhang Su strode forward and jumped down the steps. “They’re really coming. Be ready to attack anytime!”

“Brother Su, zombies are coming from that side!”

Zheng Xinyu urgently pointed toward the collapsed fence.

The west side of Building 3 bordered the community’s fence, which had partially collapsed due to an explosion at the shops across the street. The zombies wandering the street hadn’t been attracted by the explosion but roared excitedly upon seeing three living humans.

The rubble of the fence was no obstacle for the zombies, who hopped and jumped over it, rushing into the community.

Howling and screeching, seven or eight zombies bared their chilling white teeth. Some flicked out blackened tongues, spraying disgusting fluids everywhere, making onlookers sick.

Zhang Su quickly calculated the time gap and shouted, “Run! Don’t bother with them!”

As long as they ran normally, the zombies couldn’t catch up. This wasn’t the time to fight; there were too many zombies nearby. Stopping to fight would only attract more.

Zheng Xinyu and Zhong Xiaoshan had no other thoughts—they obeyed completely. Whatever Zhang Su said, they did. Despite carrying heavy loads, their feet flew over the ground.

But danger wasn’t only outside the fence. When they reached the gap between Building 4’s west side and the fence, they were suddenly attacked by zombies!

Two zombies, probably drawn by the explosion, were slowly moving toward the fire and just happened to collide with Zhang Su and the others.

“Damn!”

Shocked, Zhang Su cursed and swung his axe horizontally, striking a zombie down with a thud. Its fate was unknown.

However, the other two were in trouble.

Zhong Xiaoshan reacted slower than Zhang Su and was knocked off balance by a zombie. Fortunately, Zheng Xinyu caught her before she fell.

Seeing a zombie reach for her, Zheng Xinyu had no time to swing her bat; relying on agility, she dodged and slipped under the zombie’s arm.

Zhong Xiaoshan recovered and, seeing the zombie turn to chase Zheng Xinyu, swung her large wrench. The zombie staggered, and without caring about the outcome, she sprinted to catch up with the others.

But the crisis was not over. Near the front of Building 4, four wandering zombies blocked their path and had already spotted the three. They were moving toward them.

“Knock them down and run!”

Zhang Su led the way, carrying dozens of pounds on his back. He charged like a human cannonball, his bulging backpack smashing into an oncoming zombie head-on.

A howl escaped the zombie—a former middle school student wearing a tattered, dirty uniform. It was flung three or four meters through the air, landing awkwardly and unable to get up for a while.

Zhang Su’s human cannonball tactic was a complete success. He only felt a slight squeeze in his chest, nothing serious.
