Chapter 60: A Major Event
If Jiang Hui went without ginger for too long, she would experience extreme physical discomfort, even feeling dizzy and weak.
The last time she was hungry, figuring she was inside her mental space, she couldn't be bothered to look for food, and as a result, she passed out from hunger right there in the space. When she woke up in reality the next day, her head was throbbing with a persistent, pulsing pain, and her whole body felt utterly drained, as if every ounce of energy had been sucked out of her.
Fortunately, Jiang Hui later ate a piece of bread and drank a dose of mental stabilizer, which helped her recover. Otherwise, she probably would have checked into the hospital for the third time in less than a month since arriving in the interstellar era.
Suppressing that intense wave of hunger, Jiang Hui originally planned to head to the study to pass some time. However, as she was clearing away the pots and bowls, she was startled to discover that something was resting on the empty computer desk.
Still somewhat doubting her own eyes, Jiang Hui walked a few steps closer and realized it was genuinely there. A miniature mecha model... well, a miniature mecha model missing both arms, accompanied by a pile of loose, unassembled parts.
Wasn't this the very same mecha model she hadn't finished assembling today?!
So, by what criteria were objects brought into this mental space determined?
Some things required active thought, others couldn't be summoned no matter how hard she tried, and yet others would just show up on their own without her even thinking about them.
The more she observed this mental space, the more abnormal she felt it was. While it supposedly existed in reality, it was fundamentally something that completely defied the laws of physics. Yet, to call it an idealistic stream of consciousness would be inaccurate too, as it possessed both physical reality and precision, adhering quite strictly to scientific principles...
Anyway, these ambiguous and shifting rules left Jiang Hui somewhat bewildered. Therefore, she needed to make more use of it so she could better grasp the complete set of characteristics belonging to this space.
Jiang Hui picked up the miniature mecha model on the desk and fiddled with it absentmindedly for a while. Who would have thought that when her gaze landed on the remaining parts nearby, a sudden gleam would flash across her eyes.
By the time dawn broke the next morning, Jiang Hui was no longer in bed. Her quilt was folded neatly, and the room was completely empty.
Looking over, she was already sitting early in the living net, browsing through her optical computer. Neatly placed on the table was a miniature mecha model—the very same semi-finished product she had brought back from the Dongbo Corporation branch yesterday.
It could no longer be called a semi-finished product now. Jiang Hui had assembled all the remaining parts. Its current appearance was indistinguishable from the demonstration model shown by the instructor at Dongbo Corporation yesterday—at least outwardly.
It turned out that Dongbo Corporation genuinely replicated the experimental materials for participants on a one-to-one basis, matching the demonstration model. Later, when Jiang Hui searched on her optical computer, she discovered that such a miniature mecha model actually cost several thousand star coins to produce. For Dongbo Corporation to hand out a large bag of them to every participant completely free of charge was truly extravagant.
After discovering this item in her mental space last night, she barely slept at all afterward, spending the entire time tinkering with it.
For over a dozen hours after waking up, she repeatedly tinkered with it, assembling and disassembling it over and over, sometimes using methods she hadn't managed to try in the conference hall today... She kept assembling it right up until the moment she left the mental space, and Jiang Hui still felt a lingering sense of unfulfilled eagerness.
Once she came out, she remembered that she was no longer in the mental space but back in reality, and the physical miniature mecha model had been brought back with her as well. She could study the physical object directly, so she jumped straight out of bed, went to the living room, dug out the items, and began studying them.
Consequently, Jiang Hui had stayed up all night once again, studying this miniature mecha model until the present moment.
Not gonna lie, this thing was actually quite fun, which explained why interstellar people were so fond of mechas. Even a toy model with absolutely no combat utility or attacking power was this interesting.
Jiang Hui had to forcefully suppress the impulse to go onto the Stellar Network and place an order for a bunch of mecha models, tapping instead on the daily news section.
She certainly hadn't forgotten what happened yesterday at the Dongbo Corporation branch, and the situation still lacked clarity. If it were a planet-shaking major event, it ought to be making the headlines today.
Although it no longer had anything to do with her, the heart-pounding ordeal she experienced yesterday inexplicably made Jiang Hui somewhat concerned, prompting her to specifically wait for the release time of the next day's stellar newspaper to take a look.
Sure enough, her intuition was correct; today's planetary daily was unlike any before. Given that it was an entire new planet, the surface area was quite large and events were numerous; normally, even the biggest news would be lucky to get a three-to-five-line mention, which was already considered a mark of significant prestige.
Yet today's headline seemed different from the past. Opening it revealed an entire, uninterrupted section, and even after scrolling down several times, she still hadn't reached the bottom.
Taking a closer look, wasn't the event just what happened to them yesterday?
"Dongbo Corporation Secretly Harbors Imperial Rebels, Multiple Combat Teams of the Imperial Third Legion Dispatched for Emergency Arrest"
Below were various smaller analytical columns, expanding on the various reports stemming from the main headline. This level of prominence was enough to show just how massive an impact this incident had on their planet.
Oh boy... they had actually dispatched forces from a legion, and not just ordinary soldiers, but elite members from actual combat teams. Just what kind of high-profile big shot could these rebels jumping around out there possibly be?
Jiang Hui had arrived in the interstellar era not long ago, barely over half a month. However, through her unremitting efforts, she had frantically crammed a great deal of knowledge, which, combined with some residual common sense from the original owner, allowed her to live seamlessly in the interstellar society now.
Even so, the original owner knew quite a bit more about military matters because both of Jiang Hui's parents were soldiers. Having grown up in such an environment since childhood, she naturally knew a thing or two.
For instance, although the empire possessed hundreds or thousands of legions, the elite forces where the true power of the empire resided were confined to just nineteen of them. They belonged to the highest-tier group within the empire's official establishment, enjoying privileges and rights far superior to soldiers of the same rank in other legions.
For example, the original owner's parents had actually been officers belonging to the Eighth Legion. Their trip to the border was not part of their regular duties either; rather, they were dispatched under legion orders to assist the defense forces in combat.
It was a pity that the commander of that specific defense line miscalculated that time, causing the frontline to completely collapse. Jiang Hui's parents sacrificed their lives on the battlefield in an attempt to turn the tide, leaving only the original owner behind to grow up all alone.
...This train of thought had wandered somewhat far. In short, owing to the memories inherited from the original owner and her father's campaign journals, Jiang Hui was already quite well-informed about legion affairs.
A legion was not a loosely organized structure devoid of framework; internally, it possessed distinct chains of command and multi-layered hierarchies. Naturally, the Legion Commander was the supreme authority wielding the greatest power within the legion, beneath whom served two Deputy Commanders and an Inspector, followed by further layers of positions and officers of various military ranks—too detailed to list exhaustively.
Aside from regular soldiers divided under various commanding officers across the hierarchy, a legion would also establish several special combat teams.
Led by outstanding generals within the legion, these combat teams were primarily responsible for crucial special missions or serving as the vanguard strike force in times of war. Their members typically represented the most exceptional batch of soldiers in the legion, and in peacetime, they were required to undergo training far more grueling and arduous than ordinary soldiers.
Multiple combat teams... just how massive of a crisis could this possibly be?!
