Chapter 026: Wen Ni, Let’s Have an Affair
Wen Ni’s smile twisted into something ferocious. “Go ahead, try it.”
Jiang Shaozhang, reckless as ever and never one to play by the rules, actually pulled Wen Ni into his arms and hugged her.
Wen Ni was stunned.
When Jiang Shaozhang let go, Wen Ni gritted her teeth. “Jiang Shaozhang!”
Jiang Shaozhang leaned against the wall, his smile roguish and carefree. “Wen Ni, your man is dead, you don’t have a husband anymore, the long nights are lonely and sleep eludes you—how about we have an affair?”
No sooner had he finished speaking than Zhou Jingyi was already standing behind him.
Jiang Shaozhang hadn’t noticed. “Wen Ni, say something!”
Wen Ni pointed behind him.
Jiang Shaozhang grinned, “Trying to fool me?”
Zhou Jingyi’s voice was cold as ice. “Fool you about what?”
“Damn.”
Jiang Shaozhang spun around, startled. “Uncle Zhou, it’s you.”
Zhou Jingyi wore a black bespoke suit from Jil Sander, his calfskin shoes spotless.
Jiang Shaozhang pointed at Wen Ni. “I was pouring my heart out to you, and you’re playing games with me.”
Wen Ni said, “I’m innocent.”
Jiang Shaozhang lifted his eyes, arrogantly, “Then treat me to dinner tonight. A Thousand and One Nights, the big private room, I want the ninety-nine-thousand yuan set menu.”
Wen Ni agreed.
Jiang Shaozhang blinked in surprise. “Really?”
Wen Ni asked, “When have I ever lied to you?”
Jiang Shaozhang snorted, “Wen Ni, if you stand me up, you’re dead meat.”
Wen Ni pushed Jiang Shaozhang aside. “You’re blocking the workers.”
Jiang Shaozhang quickly moved out of the way.
Two workers were lifting a pile of silk, wobbling dangerously.
Wen Ni hurried forward to steady it, but neither worker noticed her, and the heavy board pushed Wen Ni back.
She staggered, her steps unstable.
Zhou Jingyi reached out to help.
But Wen Ni, instead, grabbed Jiang Shaozhang’s wrist. “That scared me.”
Jiang Shaozhang stared at his own arm.
He was silent for a moment.
Once the silk was all loaded, Wen Ni said, “I’ll leave now.”
Jiang Shaozhang agreed.
Then he caught up with her. “Wen Ni, are you really going to treat me to dinner?”
Wen Ni replied, “If you don’t want it, forget it.”
Jiang Shaozhang raised his brows, “Are you planning to poison me?”
Wen Ni shrugged, “That depends on your courage.”
Jiang Shaozhang followed her, saying, “I’ve never been afraid of anyone in my life.”
Wen Ni gave him a strange look.
He asked, “What’s wrong?”
Wen Ni smiled, “Last New Year, I heard you partied three days and nights, your big brother came looking for you himself, and you were so scared you jumped out of the third-floor bathroom?”
Jiang Shaozhang was mortified and lunged to cover Wen Ni’s mouth.
She dodged back.
And collided with a warm, solid body.
Wen Ni turned, surprised, and found herself pressed against Zhou Jingyi’s chest.
Ah.
But Zhou Jingyi hadn’t moved, had he? He’d been standing in place, not following.
Wen Ni didn’t think too much of it.
She straightened quickly. “Sorry, Uncle, I really deserve to die for bumping into you.”
Jiang Shaozhang, shocked, asked, “Is your family education that strict?”
Wen Ni replied, “What are you thinking? He’s my uncle, we have to keep our distance—keep our distance, you understand?”
Jiang Shaozhang nodded fervently, “Then we don’t need to keep our distance.”
Wen Ni: “……”
Jiang Shaozhang’s phone rang—his daytime plans were already being called for.
After answering, Jiang Shaozhang hung up. “I’ll go ahead.”
Wen Ni waved with a dazzling smile, “Bye bye.”
Once Jiang Shaozhang got into his car, his foolish grin faded. He ground his teeth—he was determined to win Wen Ni, to infuriate Zhou Linchuan.
Meanwhile,
The warehouse clerk found Wen Ni. “Ms. Wen, all the silk has been tallied, we’re heading back to the warehouse now.”
Wen Ni nodded and signed the inventory sheet.
She handed it back.
The clerk tucked away the sheet. “We’ll get going then.”
Wen Ni said alright.
Once the clerk left,
Zhou Jingyi said, “I’ll drive you home.”
Wen Ni glanced at him, half-smiling. “Uncle said we must keep our distance, so I won’t ride in your car.”
Zhou Jingyi gazed deeply at her.
He asked, “Wen Ni, are you sulking with me?”
Wen Ni exclaimed dramatically, “You’re overthinking it—how dare I sulk with you? I’m just afraid that, having promised to keep my distance, if I get in your car and we’re alone, I won’t be able to control myself and might harass you. That wouldn’t be good.”
Zhou Jingyi: “……”
His voice was low and slightly hoarse. “If you know it’s not good, then don’t do it.”
Wen Ni smiled at him. “Can’t help it. When something looks as good as you do, girls get impulsive.”
Ning Sui was just about to ride off on her little scooter.
Wen Ni called her over.
Ning Sui rode her pink scooter over. “Ms. Wen.”
Wen Ni hopped onto the back seat. “Let’s go.”
Ning Sui glanced at Wen Ni, then at Zhou Jingyi, finally casting a longing look at the Cullinan. “Ms. Wen, hold on tight.”
Wen Ni wrapped her arms firmly around Ning Sui’s waist.
The scooter’s chassis was so low, Wen Ni’s long legs bunched awkwardly, feet perched on tiny footrests.
Ning Sui twisted the handle, and with a swift whoosh, they sped off.
Zhou Jingyi lowered his gaze.
Suddenly, he curled his lips into a smile, though there was no warmth in his cold eyes.
He got in his car.
Drove off.
But barely five kilometers down the road, at a junction, he saw Wen Ni and Ning Sui caught by traffic police, along with their little scooter.
The officer stood before them, stern-faced, lecturing.
Wen Ni and Ning Sui stood obediently in a row, nodding repeatedly.
Coincidentally,
The traffic light at the intersection was red.
And also coincidentally,
Zhou Jingyi’s Cullinan stopped at the junction, waiting for green.
His window was still open.
He turned his head slightly, meeting Wen Ni’s gaze.
Wen Ni stared at him, dazed—what terrible luck.
Zhou Jingyi clearly heard the officer say, “You two stand here and catch another non-motorized vehicle owner who breaks the rules like you did, and then you’re free to go.”
Wen Ni parted her red lips, about to say something to Zhou Jingyi, looking a touch seductive.
Zhou Jingyi replied, “Keep your distance.”
And then,
The light turned green.
Zhou Jingyi drove off without a second thought.
Wen Ni took a deep breath, tore her gaze from Zhou Jingyi’s disappearing car, and dug her nails into her fingers.
Ning Sui said, “Ms. Wen, sorry. If I’d reacted quicker and turned around, it would’ve been fine.”
Wen Ni comforted her, “It’s my fault too. I shouldn’t have had you take me. It’s okay, let’s catch someone, once we do, we’ll be free.”
Ning Sui said, “Ms. Wen, there’s something I’m not sure whether I should say.”
Wen Ni smiled, “What can’t you say to me?”
Ning Sui took a deep breath. “Young Master Jiang isn’t a good person. You shouldn’t get too close to him. While checking him out, I found there was a girl at our school who almost jumped off a building—it seemed to be because of him. He’s not exactly trustworthy.”
Wen Ni nodded without hesitation. “I know. I’m well aware.”
Ning Sui smiled. “That’s a relief.”
The two of them had been standing in the spring breeze for ten minutes, legs aching.
Ning Sui said, “I’ve got an idea.”
She took out her phone and called her boyfriend. “Zhang Zhe, come to the intersection at 2 Zhaoyang Road. It’s important. Get here right away.”
Wen Ni: “???”
Better him than me?
Five minutes later, Ning Sui’s boyfriend cruised over on his own scooter, carefree—no helmet, even riding in the car lane.
Ning Sui ran over to catch him.
Zhang Zhe saw her and tried to turn and flee.
But Ning Sui was faster, grabbing his handlebars and pulling out the keys. “Officer, we caught one!”
Zhang Zhe: “……”
Ning Sui whispered urgently, “Help me out here. My boss is here. I can stand around, but I can’t let her wait with me.”
Zhang Zhe took a deep breath, resigned.
Wen Ni ran over. “Sorry to trouble you. I’ll treat you to dinner another day.”
Zhang Zhe, seeing Wen Ni for the first time, realized just how beautiful his girlfriend’s ‘Ms. Wen’ was—he nodded repeatedly. “No problem at all. Supporting Sui’s work is the least I can do.”
Ning Sui handed her own scooter to Wen Ni, took her boyfriend’s scooter, and rode off.
Zhang Zhe withdrew his gaze.
Just then,
Not far away,
Three sharp-suited professionals, riding scooters without helmets, sped straight toward the intersection.
Zhang Zhe quickly said, “Officer, I’ve caught three more!”
