Chapter 48: Consultant?
Pei Susu: [Could you perhaps give me a hint about what this is regarding, President Mo?]
Mo Qingyu seemed to have been waiting for her reply and answered almost instantly.
Mo Qingyu: [It concerns an international conglomerate we’re working with. The client is extremely demanding. Our team has produced several versions of proposals, but none have met their expectations.]
Mo Qingyu: [I’ve heard you’re quite skilled in this field, which is why I wanted to ask for your help, Miss Pei.]
From the looks of it, it truly was just an ordinary commission. Pei Susu agreed without hesitation.
Pei Susu: [I’ll come to Mo Group tomorrow. Let’s discuss the details of the project in person then.]
Mo Qingyu had reached out to her, perhaps partly because he’d heard favorable recommendations, and partly in a hurry to return the favor from her birthday banquet. At Pei Susu’s current standing, gaining access to such a major project required an opportunity—and Mo Qingyu was now placing that opportunity in her hands.
Whether she could seize it would depend on her own abilities.
The next morning, Pei Susu arrived at the Mo Group building. Having made an appointment in advance, she was smoothly escorted by the receptionist to the top floor. Mo Qingyu, dressed in a sharp black suit, looked both capable and striking. Upon seeing Pei Susu, she rose with a touch of enthusiasm.
“Thank you so much for coming, Miss Pei. Please, have a seat. I’ll have my assistant get you something to drink.”
“Coffee or tea?”
Pei Susu settled in with a smile, and the assistant, knowing her preferences, went off to prepare tea. Mo Qingyu looked a bit embarrassed.
“To be frank with you, Miss Pei, I turned to you today because currently, none of my team can handle this matter.”
She handed Pei Susu the client’s dossier.
“This client is very fond of our Chinese culture. Mo Group has tried similar styles before, but the tricky part is that we’ve encountered some communication barriers…”
“The rest you can read for yourself and get a feel for it.”
Pei Susu opened the file in her hands. The client was looking to create a tourism village that combined both Chinese and Western styles—a creative park that would be unique in the city. If executed well, it wouldn’t just fulfill the client’s requirements but would also greatly boost Mo Group’s reputation. No wonder Mo Qingyu cared so much about the project.
“At present, our communication with the client is at an impasse. The client’s personality is a bit… eccentric, perhaps? We’re afraid of making mistakes during negotiations, which is why we hope you can help, Miss Pei.”
The dossier’s information on the client was sparse. All Pei Susu could glean was that the client was a middle-aged man, nearing fifty, with half-Chinese heritage. Perhaps due to his roots, he now wished to return to China and invest in local industry.
Other than that, his preferences, temperament, and the exact style of collaboration he wanted remained a mystery.
“This… might indeed be a little tricky.”
Pei Susu fell silent for a moment, deep in thought. Then her eyes lit up.
“I think I might have an idea. President Mo, if you trust me, could you give me a few days?”
Mo Qingyu hesitated, then apologized, “I’ll need a definite timeline, since I can’t decide this project alone—it represents the hard work of many at Mo Group.”
Pei Susu understood her concern.
“In that case, could you gather everyone from the company who’s involved with this project?” Her eyes were clear and bright. “Let’s hold a meeting to discuss things first, and then decide if I’m the right person to take charge.”
Seeing Pei Susu’s calm confidence, Mo Qingyu found herself reassured and nodded.
“All right.”
Still, she frowned slightly, apologetic. “The only trouble is, most of the people in charge of this project are veteran employees with real achievements at Mo Group. They might be difficult to win over…”
“That’s my problem to solve. What I need from you, President Mo, is simply to assemble everyone so I have a chance to speak with them.”
Indeed, Mo Qingyu was facing a dilemma. Pei Susu was confident she could handle the obstacles before her; the real challenge would be dealing with the client later. In other circumstances, she might not have wanted to take on such a headache, but if she could pull this off, it would be a brilliant addition to her résumé.
“Miss Pei, do you really have a way?”
Pei Susu’s eyes sparkled with vitality. “There are always ways to try—one only knows the outcome by giving it a shot, don’t you think, President Mo?”
Mo Qingyu acted swiftly, soon gathering all the relevant staff in the conference room.
The employees exchanged glances, already guessing the purpose of the meeting. This client was infamous for being difficult, and with the project stalled, what good could another discussion do?
“President Mo, it’s not that we want to discourage you,” one employee finally stood up, unable to hold back. “This client has refused to communicate with us altogether. No matter how many proposals we draft, there’s simply no way to get through to him!”
“That’s right. The proposals we’ve spent days working on have all been returned without even a glance from the client’s company.”
Under such circumstances, complaints were only natural. Mo Qingyu, though a woman, was not one to be cowed. After everyone had voiced their frustrations, she spoke in a firm tone.
“So what now? Are you suggesting I give up on a project that others would kill for? That we let all our prior efforts go to waste?”
After her words, the employees fell into dejected silence. They had all poured their energy into this project—how could they simply watch their efforts come to nothing?
“Everyone—”
Pei Susu entered the conference room. Her unfamiliar face drew puzzled looks, and the others glanced at Mo Qingyu.
“Allow me to introduce myself. I am Pei Susu, the special consultant President Mo has invited to work on the TI Group collaboration.”
At these words, the room erupted in astonishment.
“A consultant? And such a young girl?”
Today, Pei Susu wore a simple white dress, lacking her usual businesslike air. She looked young and beautiful—hardly the image of a seasoned professional who could tackle such a thorny problem.
Seeing the skepticism on every face, Pei Susu was unruffled. Holding the documents she’d just printed, she handed them out one by one.
“These are summaries of everyone’s work on the project thus far. I’ve already reviewed them carefully in President Mo’s office. In fact, your initial efforts were entirely on the right track.”
