Chapter Seventy-Five: What They Deserve
This is exactly what they deserve.
“He thinks he knows me, but honestly, I don’t like that brooch—or him—in the slightest.”
Pei Susu sneered, then pressed her phone screen off.
Seeing the expression on her face, Fu Zhichen’s nervousness faded away, and he nodded. Liang Wenru was completely out of Pei Susu’s heart; though he’d known this for some time, only now, seeing her so utterly indifferent, could he truly feel at ease. Liang Wenru was willing to play the fool, but it no longer had anything to do with Pei Susu. Who knew how many more messages he would send her? In any case, she probably wouldn’t spare them a single glance.
Suddenly, a call came in. Fu Zhichen answered it with practiced calm, but his brow gradually furrowed.
Pei Susu turned to him, her voice gentle, “What’s happened?”
“There’s something urgent at the company I need to handle. I might have to leave for a while.”
She didn’t find this strange at all. “Alright, go ahead. The auction’s about to break for intermission anyway. The items I want are in the latter half, and I have enough money with me.”
In truth, she hadn’t needed Fu Zhichen to accompany her in the first place; it was only because he always worried and insisted on coming along. “If you have business, just go. I’ll be fine here on my own.”
Pei Susu had always been used to being by herself. Having Fu Zhichen nearby was a pleasant embellishment, but his absence didn’t trouble her. Besides, it must truly be urgent; otherwise, despite knowing he had affairs to attend to, the company wouldn’t have called him.
“Alright.” Fu Zhichen lowered his head, sent a message to someone, then stood up.
“Mo Qingyu and Fu Yanyue are here today as well. If I can’t make it back in time, you can go find them.”
Fu Yanyue?
It had been quite a while since she’d seen her. Pei Susu was pleasantly surprised and nodded. “Sounds good, I’ll find them later.”
Seeing the way Pei Susu’s eyes lit up, Fu Zhichen felt an inexplicable pang of jealousy.
“You’re that happy just to hear they’re here?”
His jealousy seemed completely misplaced, making Pei Susu laugh. “You’re even jealous about something like this?”
“I’m jealous of everyone who has your attention,” Fu Zhichen replied solemnly, then turned and left.
Pei Susu was left alone, her ears burning.
This man… he was getting better and better at sweet talk. He acted so unaffected, yet in truth, he’d already done everything he could.
Once Fu Zhichen had gone, the auction entered its intermission. Mo Qingyu must have received the news, as she soon appeared before Pei Susu.
“It’s been a few days, Susu.”
Mo Qingyu was dressed in a black suit today, standing out among the female guests with an air of heroic elegance. Pei Susu’s eyes brightened at the sight.
“President Mo.”
They, too, hadn’t seen each other for some time. Sitting together, they chatted about work for a while. Fortunately, the latest projects for the Mo Group were progressing smoothly; Mo Qingyu was here more for a breath of fresh air than to buy anything in particular.
“I heard about what happened recently. Haihe Company was nothing but an empty shell. I wonder who went to such lengths to place it in your path.”
Normally, this would have been a question for Xiao Zhang, but as he knew nothing, there was little to be done.
“In any case, it’s good you noticed Haihe’s irregularities before any real harm was done. That’s something to be grateful for,” Mo Qingyu said, seeing Pei Susu’s pale expression and offering comfort.
Pei Susu collected herself and shook her head, a faint smile on her lips. “It’s all in the past now, nothing to be afraid of. It’s just… something about it still feels odd.”
If their suspicions were correct and someone had orchestrated everything from the shadows, then it was only a matter of time before trouble returned.
“But let’s not dwell on that,” Mo Qingyu said, changing the subject, and the two continued talking about recent events. The atmosphere was lively.
As people came by to chat, Mo Qingyu, recalling some favors owed, introduced Pei Susu to several familiar business partners. Pei Susu, with her warm, approachable demeanor, quickly won their goodwill—until Liang Wenru appeared.
The moment she saw him, Pei Susu’s expression turned cold, irritation flickering across her face.
“Susu, you’re here too!”
Liang Wenru’s eyes lit up when he saw her and he hurried over. “I thought you were ignoring my messages on purpose. Did you not see your phone?”
Not only had she seen them, but she’d also set his number to ‘Do Not Disturb.’ Pei Susu gave a stiff, insincere smile—the flaw in this situation was entirely Liang Wenru’s doing.
Though they’d never met, Mo Qingyu quickly guessed his identity from the atmosphere between them.
“Susu, please, I came back just to talk things through with you…”
Pei Susu frowned, her expression growing even colder.
“I didn’t expect President Pei to have such an ardent admirer,” someone nearby remarked, making Pei Susu’s face darken further.
“We’re already divorced. I believe we’ve made things perfectly clear, Mr. Liang. There is nothing left between us.”
At her words, the bystander fell silent, exchanging awkward glances with a friend. They knew of the tangled history between Pei Susu and her ex-husband; word in the industry was that he’d been ungrateful and disloyal. Their gazes toward Liang Wenru were now tinged with disdain.
But Liang Wenru paid no attention to them, caring only about what Pei Susu thought. How could she possibly reject him?
“That’s enough,” Mo Qingyu said, shielding Pei Susu behind her. “Susu is hardly lacking in better suitors than you. You’d do well to keep your distance.”
After all, before leaving, Fu Zhichen had entrusted Pei Susu to her care. Mo Qingyu felt she had the authority to intervene and couldn’t betray that trust.
At that moment, Fu Yanyue, who had just arrived and witnessed the scene, discreetly took out her phone and sent a message to Fu Zhichen.
Fu Yanyue: Your wife’s in danger! Hurry, come quickly!
Standing in the crowd, Pei Susu’s expression had grown icy.
“Liang Wenru, I owe you nothing, and there’s nothing more to say. I won’t accept anything you give me, and there will be no other outcome for our marriage.”
“I believe I’ve made myself very clear. I have a new boyfriend now. Please, stop pestering me.”
At her words, Liang Wenru’s face seemed to crumble.
