Chapter 87: Lu Qianqian’s Assistance
“You should go to the PR department—they need you more over there.” Right now, the PR team was shorthanded and certainly needed her help. It might be exhausting, but she’d already sworn she’d come to help, and she couldn’t go back on her word now.
“Alright, I’ll head there right away!”
Watching Fu Yanyue march off with great enthusiasm toward the PR department, Fu Zhichen hardly expected her to be of much real help. The meeting was about to start, and he had no time to worry about anything else. He turned and went into the room.
Meanwhile, having heard the news, Lu Qianqian paced anxiously in the living room, her agitation making Lu Yu nervous.
“Please, in your condition, you shouldn’t worry about anyone else. If you go to see Su Su now, she’ll probably end up worrying about you instead.”
“How can I not be worried?” Ever since seeing the news, Lu Qianqian had been anxious to death. Even now, there wasn’t a single positive update—just a flood of conspiracy theories.
But she knew Pei Susu so well. Leaving aside whether Susu was that kind of person or not, there was absolutely no reason for her to do such a thing! Hurting that Madam Chen’s child wouldn’t benefit her in the least. Unless she’d lost her mind, Susu would never deliberately harm someone else’s child!
“She’s my close friend, and now that something’s happened to her, maybe she really needs my help. How could I just stand by and do nothing?” The more Lu Qianqian spoke, the more convinced she became of her own reasoning. She hurried on, “I have to go! Don’t try to stop me, or I’ll give you the cold shoulder!”
Lu Qianqian was pregnant and not at all suited to be running around. Lu Yu watched her, anxiety plain on his face.
“How about this—why don’t you call Pei Susu first and see what she thinks? Alright?” If she were on her own, Lu Yu wouldn’t be so worried if she just went for a visit. But now, with her pregnancy already a high risk, how could he let her go?
“Fine…” Lu Qianqian reluctantly agreed. After all, she was a mother now and knew that putting stress on herself could only harm the baby. She took out her phone and called Pei Susu.
“Susu, are you alright?” she asked the moment the call connected.
Pei Susu hadn’t expected a call from Lu Qianqian at this time. Although it felt nice to be cared for, she didn’t want Qianqian to know about her current predicament.
Qianqian should be resting, preparing to welcome her new baby—not distracted by her troubles.
If anything happened to her, Pei Susu wouldn’t know how to explain it to Lu Yu.
Thinking of Madam Chen’s child, Jiang Xueran also felt a complicated sorrow. She hadn’t meant for any of this to happen; it really had nothing to do with her. But a life was a life. If that innocent child became a casualty, it would be a tragedy.
As she pondered all this, Lu Qianqian’s voice sounded again.
“Susu?”
Pei Susu snapped back to attention.
“Don’t worry, I’m fine. I’m just resting at the villa. Fu Zhichen won’t let me get involved in any of this.”
Lu Qianqian breathed a sigh of relief. Thankfully, Fu Zhichen was reliable—not like Liang Wenru before him. As long as he could protect Susu, that was enough.
“You really are alright?”
Of course Pei Susu wasn’t truly alright, but she still gave a firm answer.
“There’s no need to worry about me. Don’t read all that stuff online, either. You’re about to be a mother—shouldn’t you be a little more steady?”
She could guess how much effort Lu Yu must have spent trying to persuade Qianqian, and only now had she been convinced.
Feeling a little embarrassed, Lu Qianqian let Susu comfort her before ending the call.
“Now can you relax? Susu said herself she’s fine, so stop worrying yourself for nothing.”
But after hanging up, the smile faded from Lu Qianqian’s face. She sighed, and at Lu Yu’s words, shot him a glare.
“What do you know? Susu’s just putting on a brave face. She doesn’t want me to worry, but that doesn’t mean nothing’s wrong.”
Lu Qianqian was perhaps one of the people who understood Pei Susu best. She could easily hear the forced cheerfulness in Susu’s tone.
Susu was rarely like this. The Pei Susu she knew was always calm, always able to handle whatever came her way. But this time, she was truly helpless.
“No, I have to go see her.”
The more she thought about it, the more convinced she became that Susu shouldn’t be left alone. Seeing her so determined, Lu Yu knew that keeping her at home would only make things worse for her health. He had no choice but to sigh.
“Fine, I’ll take you. But you have to promise me—once we see her and make sure Miss Pei’s alright, we come straight back.”
Lu Qianqian wasn’t unreasonable, and she quickly agreed.
“Alright!”
She turned to change her clothes. Lu Yu hadn’t been paying much attention to the news that day, but while she was getting ready, he glanced at the headlines. As he read, his expression grew thoughtful.
The events of the day clearly hadn’t been accidental. First, there was the scandal about Pei Susu, and then everything shifted to Fu Zhichen and the Fu Group. It was obviously a calculated move targeting them.
“I’m ready! Let’s go!” Lu Qianqian finished changing quickly, but as she hurried back, Lu Yu gripped his car keys and shook his head.
“Something’s not right. I don’t think we should go.”
Lu Qianqian’s eyes flashed with hurt. “But you just promised you’d take me to see Susu. How can you go back on your word now?”
“I may be pregnant, but I’m still myself. I can’t just stop caring about my friends because of the baby. But I did promise you I wouldn’t put our child at risk for Susu’s sake. Don’t make this harder for me.”
Before Lu Yu could reply, his phone rang.
“Qianqian, listen to me—don’t come.”
It was Pei Susu’s voice.
Lu Qianqian was stunned as Susu continued, “Mr. Lu just called me. We talked it over and decided that if you two come, you might get caught up in even more trouble.”
Her confusion only deepened.
“I just read the news, and I think this whole thing is a setup—a chain of traps. There are plenty of people who know how close you are to Pei Susu, aren’t there?”
