Chapter 88 Approaching Danger
“It’s precisely because people know you’re very close, and also know that your situation is special—you’re expecting a child. If anything were to happen, both Pei Susu and the Lu family, as well as the Fu family and the Lu family, would suffer a devastating blow to their relationships.”
Lu Yu frowned. “Miss Pei and I discussed it, and we think there’s a strong chance someone might target you.”
Lu Qianqian could hardly believe it, but seeing how serious Lu Yu looked, she found herself half-convinced.
“So what do you plan to do?” she asked. “Do you mean… someone could tamper with my route?”
This was an all-out commercial war, and yet it had somehow come to involve so many lives.
“Qianqian, don’t panic,” Pei Susu’s calm voice came through the phone, giving Lu Qianqian a measure of reassurance. “Our company recently developed a batch of self-driving robots. This is the perfect opportunity to put them to use.”
Pei Susu had no shortage of resources at her disposal, and the robots had already been dispatched from the company.
“I see what you mean, Susu. We’re going to flush the snake from its hole.” Originally, Lu Qianqian had planned to drive herself, so if anyone wanted to make a move, it would have to be on the car or along the route.
By having the self-driving robots take their car out, they could test the waters and see if anything happened.
“And besides, are you ignoring even my advice now?” Pei Susu had anticipated that she wouldn’t stay obediently at home. “The child you’re carrying is the most important thing right now. No matter what, I’m not in any mortal danger. I’m with Fu Zhichen, and I’m very well protected.”
“If everything really is fine, then yes, I’m deceiving you. But I promise, until this is over, I’ll keep my wits about me at all times.”
“Don’t you trust me?”
At that, Lu Qianqian could only sigh and agree.
“All right, I understand,” she said. She knew that if she continued to insist on seeing Pei Susu now, she would be acting far too willful, so she could only go along.
“I just got word—the robots have arrived at the door.”
Lu Qianqian exchanged a glance with Lu Yu, who went to the door to receive the robots from Pei Susu.
“Now, just put these robots in the car,” Pei Susu instructed.
Following her directions, Lu Yu set up the robots. Watching them actually drive the car away from the Lu residence, he couldn’t hide his fascination.
“From a distance, the robots do look quite realistic, but if you get close, you can still spot something off. We’ll have to disguise them a bit more,” he said.
Lu Qianqian was eager to help, but Pei Susu quickly relegated her to the side.
“Just sit and watch. You’re seven months along—can’t you be a little more careful?” Pei Susu scolded lightly, then directed Lu Yu to lower the car’s privacy screens.
This time, the robots were dressed in their clothes, making them look even more convincingly human.
“All right, let the robots depart,” she said.
Lu Yu nodded, closed the car door, and sure enough, the robots smoothly drove the car out of the garage. From a distance, it really did look like the two of them were inside.
Unless someone looked very closely, it would be impossible to tell the difference.
Pei Susu nodded in satisfaction. “I never thought these things would come in handy at a time like this…”
“So now we just wait for news?” Lu Qianqian asked skeptically, watching the car on the surveillance screen.
“Monitoring is all we can do for now, but if we want to catch the real culprit, watching the cameras might not be enough,” Pei Susu admitted, a hint of hesitation in her voice.
The best plan she could think of was to follow the car, to see firsthand what happened and who the would-be attackers were. But she couldn’t be sure if the car would actually be targeted.
And having anyone follow the car at this point would be extremely risky.
“I’ll tail the car,” Lu Yu said. “I’ve already arranged for people from the Lu family to guard Pei Susu. That way, everything is covered.”
“Are you sure?” Lu Qianqian gripped his hand and shook her head. “I just don’t feel good about this… We can just watch on the cameras. Didn’t Susu say it was dangerous?”
Lu Yu looked at her dewy eyes and couldn’t help but smile.
“Don’t worry, nothing will happen. They’d never imagine we’re not in the car, but robots are. I’ll follow from a distance, so I won’t be discovered. You stay home and watch the monitors. If you notice anything unusual, contact me immediately, all right?”
If this were only about Pei Susu, he wouldn’t risk it. But now it was clear they were the real targets. For the baby, and for their shared safety, he had to take this chance.
Pei Susu understood what Lu Yu was thinking and fell silent for a moment.
“I’m sorry.”
“There’s no point in apologies now. Better let Fu Zhichen treat me to dinner when this is all over.” Things had already come to this, and none of it was what Pei Susu had wanted. Rather than apologize, it was better to see it through.
“The three of us will stay in touch at all times. Qianqian, just rest at home. No matter what happens, do not go out. Do you hear me?”
Lu Qianqian knew that her previous stubbornness had worried both Pei Susu and Lu Yu deeply, so she nodded.
“Don’t worry, I won’t go anywhere. You can count on me.”
Hearing this, Lu Yu was much relieved. He took a car that was rarely used and followed from a distance behind the vehicle the robots were driving.
Meanwhile, Lu Qianqian opened the surveillance feed on her phone and watched the progress of the robot-driven car.
Seeing the car proceed steadily along the road, she folded her arms, tense but still thinking those people couldn’t be so mad.
If they really wanted to harm her and her child, it would be outright murder—just to squeeze the Fu Group in the business world? Surely no one would go that far.
When the car neared a corner and was about to reach Pei Susu’s place, she finally breathed a sigh of relief.
“It looks like nothing happened after all. Maybe you were just being paranoid—”
But at that very moment, a deafening explosion erupted from the phone, and the surveillance screen went black.
Startled, Lu Qianqian’s face turned deathly pale. She tapped her phone several times, but the feed remained dark. It was clear that a violent explosion had just taken place.
