Chapter 90: The Daughter Disappears
Lu Yu quickly returned to the Lu family estate. Seeing that he was unharmed, Lu Qianqian finally let out a sigh of relief.
“Thank goodness we didn’t get in that car earlier. Now that those villains have all been caught, we can finally rest easy.”
“I’m afraid it’s not so simple,” Lu Yu replied. He had seen it clearly just now; one of the men seemed to have a mind of his own and looked like the leader among the four. If he refused to talk, it was likely the others would keep their mouths shut as well.
Hearing this, Lu Qianqian’s worries resurfaced. “So you just left Susu with them? What if something serious happens?”
Seeing the worry brimming in Lu Qianqian’s wide, watery eyes, Lu Yu could only shake his head helplessly. “You and Pei Susu are close. You should know what she’s capable of. Does she look like someone who’s easily bullied?”
With only a few words, she had nearly coaxed those men into revealing the mastermind behind the scenes. Pei Susu was never a simple woman. Although she’d been sheltered at home by Fu Zhichen this time, she might just find a breakthrough.
“That’s true…” Lu Qianqian had to admit, Pei Susu was one of the smartest women she’d ever met. No matter what she faced, she always managed to find a way out. This time would be no different.
“In that case… I won’t worry anymore.” She nestled into Lu Yu’s embrace, her anxious heart finally easing a little. “By the way, did you see that robot just now? That’s from a project I invested in. It’s not in full operation yet, but it’s honestly amazing!”
Seeing Lu Qianqian’s proud expression, Lu Yu shook his head and affectionately tapped her nose. “Yes, my dear Mrs. Lu, you’ve always had a unique eye for things.”
Though, truthfully, it wasn’t the project she had an eye for, but for Pei Susu herself. Lu Yu knew Lu Qianqian all too well; she rarely even glanced at project proposals and hardly knew what investments had the best prospects. She simply trusted Pei Susu wholeheartedly.
But as it turned out, trusting Pei Susu was never a mistake. She had always walked the right path. Fu Zhichen had truly found himself a remarkable girlfriend—someone capable of lending a hand in every way.
“I know you want to help Pei Susu, but the people on the other side are well-prepared and seem to have plotted this for some time. If we get involved, we might just complicate things for them.”
Hearing this, Lu Qianqian could only lower her head in disappointment.
“All right, I’ve heard enough of your grand theories for one day. I won’t get involved—after all, besides being Pei Susu’s friend, I’m also your wife.” Back in their room, she let out a sigh. “I just hope Susu can get through this ordeal quickly…”
Pei Susu faced the four men before her. Nearby, members of the Fu family were tidying up the scene of the explosion. The car had exploded from the intense heat of the crash. That the four men survived unscathed was nothing short of a miracle.
“Though you’re right about one thing, you’re in no position to bargain with me now,” Pei Susu said calmly. “If I turn you over to the police, they’ll get to the bottom of this eventually. Since you don’t want to talk, let the police ask the questions.”
She glanced at the person beside her, who immediately moved to call the police.
“Wait!” The man who had almost spoken out of impulse glanced anxiously at the older man beside him. “Brother Li, you know I have family to take care of. I only did this for the money. If we get locked up, it’s all over. Brother Li, you know my situation! My daughter needs me…”
The others quickly joined in, pleading as well.
Brother Li, as they called him, was clearly their leader—older than the other three, dressed in rags, looking as though he’d long gone hungry, his face thin and sallow.
Ordinarily, people who lived by the knife’s edge didn’t fare so poorly; clients in this line of business rarely skimped on money.
“It seems each of you has someone you care about. Even if you have no one, surely you care about your companions?” Pei Susu’s gaze swept over him, noting the frayed edge of his clothes, the faded but still lovingly preserved patch—a cute pattern, unlikely from a wife or lover, but more likely from a child…
“I suppose your daughter wouldn’t want to see her father thrown in jail, would she?”
Brother Li looked up warily, as if trying to figure out how she knew he had a daughter. His eyes fell to the patch on his sleeve—a little lamb. For a moment, the roughness of his weathered face softened.
“If she could really see me now… What would it matter if I went to jail?” His voice was hoarse. “My daughter disappeared many years ago. I’ve done this work all these years just to earn enough to search for her.”
He closed his eyes. The softness vanished.
“Don’t try to use that against me. I won’t waver, because I know you wouldn’t show me any mercy either.”
A clever man, Pei Susu thought. She didn’t press him with old tricks. To speak with a clever person, you needed clever means. If he wanted to find his daughter, then she would help him.
“How do you know I’m trying to threaten you?” she asked, pulling out her phone and snapping a picture of the patch on his sleeve.
Brother Li immediately covered it, alarmed. “What are you doing?”
Pei Susu sent the photo to a friend—a lawyer who worked in this field and might have access to certain leads.
“What am I doing? Helping you find your daughter. Does that count?”
Her calm words stripped away Brother Li’s defenses in an instant. He lunged forward, trying to grab her phone, but the Lu family’s men restrained him at once.
“Are you serious… You’d really help me find my daughter?”
Seeing the burning hope in his eyes, Pei Susu nodded. “I’m not one for lies. Here, take a look.” She showed him the message she’d just sent. “This lawyer friend of mine has helped recover many missing children. If you can give me more details about your daughter, maybe I can find her even faster.”
“I—I have plenty of information about her!”
