Chapter 91: One Less Enemy
Tears and snot streamed down the man's face.
"Help me, please, help me!"
He had finally glimpsed a sliver of hope. After searching desperately for so many years, he had never found anyone who could help him, because all he had done was shrouded in darkness.
He had never dared approach the authorities, afraid that his misdeeds would come to light.
Even though, at the very beginning, his sole aim was to find his daughter, he didn't dare wield the law as a weapon in his search.
"But why should I help you?"
Pei Susu, though sympathetic to the man's plight and wishing for his daughter's return, could not forget that it had been these very four men who had nearly taken Qianqian Lu's life.
Was his daughter's life worth more than anyone else's?
"To find your daughter, you've taken countless lives over the years. If your daughter knew what you'd done in her name, how do you think she'd react?"
Li's face twisted in agony at these words. The three men beside him each drifted into their own memories.
They all had their reasons for doing this. If not, who would gamble with their own lives?
"I'm willing to help you. I'll take care of your families as well. But as for the mastermind behind all this…"
"We'll talk! We’re all willing to talk."
Seeing Li had spoken, the other three young men quickly echoed his words.
"Yes, we'll tell you everything! As long as you help look after our families, even if you send us to jail, it doesn't matter!"
Now that they had finally relented, Pei Susu pursed her lips, turning to signal for someone to take them inside to record their statements, considering how best to proceed.
Raising her eyes, she realized Fu Zhichen was standing not far away. She had no idea how long he'd been there, or whether he'd seen her stern display of threats and promises.
"Our lady is truly formidable!"
The assistant couldn't help but exclaim. Fu Zhichen coughed lightly, and the assistant, realizing he’d spoken out of turn, hastened to make amends.
"Um… I’ll go keep an eye on those men, make sure they don’t pull any tricks. Miss Pei, Mr. Fu, you two talk."
With that, he hurriedly slipped into the villa.
"How did you get back so quickly?"
Pei Susu felt slightly awkward. She remembered how, before leaving, Fu Zhichen had specially reminded her not to wander about and to wait safely for his return.
Yet, upon coming back, he was greeted by this scene of chaos.
"The matters at the hospital have all been settled. I heard there was an accident at home and was worried about your safety."
"But judging by the scene… it seems there was little need for concern."
The wrecked car was parked to one side, but at a glance Pei Susu was clearly unharmed.
Pei Susu was still a little embarrassed, but seeing that Fu Zhichen showed no intention of blaming her, she recounted everything that had just transpired.
"Not only did they try to harm us, they even targeted Qianqian… If it weren't for my and President Lu's vigilance, noticing something was off ahead of time…"
"Otherwise, there might have been three more bodies alongside that wrecked car."
Though Pei Susu spoke lightly, there was still a trace of fear in her demeanor. Fu Zhichen, heart aching, pulled her into his arms.
"You're safe now. I'm back, and I won’t let anyone harm you or those beside you."
His familiar scent surrounded her, and Pei Susu’s eyes turned slightly red as she nodded.
"I'm sorry. I know these people came for the Fu Group, but if it weren’t for Madam Chen’s involvement, they wouldn’t have had the chance."
"Not necessarily."
Recalling his recent findings, Fu Zhichen guided Pei Susu inside.
"Let’s hear what those four have to say before we judge."
"Alright, let's go in."
Li had been silent, but when Pei Susu entered, he became cooperative.
"You arrived so quickly. You must have known in advance. Yet from the moment I was attacked to when the news broke, you only had about two hours to react."
"How did you manage to tamper with the car ahead of time?"
Li gave a bitter laugh.
"We possess no such abilities. It's because none of this was an accident. Madam Chen’s child isn’t her husband’s."
"So she was planning from the very start to get rid of it quietly."
Pei Susu was stunned.
"What?"
She turned to Fu Zhichen, recalling his earlier words—could it truly have all been part of their scheme from the beginning?
"If I’m not mistaken, your employer is the CEO of M Group, isn’t he?"
Though spoken as a question, Fu Zhichen’s tone was one of certainty.
Li nodded.
"You’re clever, Mr. Fu. Yes, it’s M Group's president. I know about the child because I’ve worked for him for years and have done countless such things for him."
"Madam Chen’s child wasn’t her husband’s, but M Group’s president, Zhang Ming’s!"
The sudden revelation of such a scandalous secret made Pei Susu and the assistant exchange glances, both catching the intrigue in each other's eyes.
Fu Zhichen’s expression remained unchanged. "But words alone are no proof—why should I believe you?"
"A DNA test will suffice, won’t it? I’ve heard Madam Chen has already terminated the pregnancy, but the story about her never being able to bear children again is likely fabricated."
Li went on, "The fetus was already quite developed. With your resources, Mr. Fu, obtaining a DNA sample shouldn’t be difficult."
Indeed, it would not be hard. Fu Zhichen looked to his assistant, who immediately understood and went off to make arrangements.
"I’ve told you everything. Now, will you help me investigate my daughter?"
Pei Susu had never intended to make things difficult for Li in this regard; her earlier threats had merely been a means to obtain results more quickly. She nodded in response.
"Describe your daughter’s features. I’ll send the information out. If you have anything else, let me know and I’ll handle it."
At Pei Susu’s words, a strange excitement lit up Li’s weathered face, as though he were no longer a criminal but only a desperate father.
His heart and mind were filled with nothing but his daughter.
"If this can truly be proven, at least we’ll have one less enemy to face."
Ever since the incident, Madam Chen’s husband had been exerting pressure behind the scenes.
