Chapter 20: Drawing Cards!
Li Lekang had undoubtedly arrived in a golden age. Although he missed the last train of the demon clan’s conquest of the myriad worlds, sometimes returning home to live in seclusion among the fields was also a worthy way of life. At least, Lekang hadn’t yet had his fill of modern living—the supercars, luxury mansions, grand yachts, all those mundane pleasures that somehow irresistibly beckoned one to own and enjoy them.
The ease with which he gained ten thousand followers had awakened his ambition. He already regarded one hundred thousand, even a million, as within easy reach! Suppressing his excitement, he turned his attention to another matter.
Due to the game mechanics fused into his transmigration, Lekang possessed an exclusive advantage: every time he leveled up a spell, he would receive a card draw reward! As a young man, he was well acquainted with the mystical art of card draws. The rules were common knowledge: cards came in ranks—white ordinary, green premium, blue rare, purple epic, and gold legendary.
Their contents ranged from Demon Enforcer (white), Abyssal Succubus (blue), Magic Dragon Mount (purple), and so forth, up to the legendary gold cards. Lekang noticed the rules had changed somewhat from the game; the content was richer now, and no examples of legendary cards were given, so he asked, “What legendary cards are there?”
The Scroll Spirit answered with a mysterious tone, “They are all characters at the Demon King level.”
Lekang pressed further, “If I draw Lucifer, does that make him my pet card?”
The Scroll Spirit replied, “Of course. These rules supersede all creatures; rest assured.”
“Goodness, wouldn’t that mean I could overthrow the boss and work for myself someday?”
Without any sense of shame, Lekang rubbed his hands together, preparing for the draw. But on second thought, he made his way to the bathroom to wash his hands.
He bathed, changed his clothes, cleansing himself of any trace of bad luck. Then he sat cross-legged on his bed, calmed his heart, and silently began the ritual.
A heap of cards appeared before him.
He reached forward, his hand seeming to penetrate the void, and grasped the card he fancied.
“Let the kid have a chance to escape misfortune and embrace fortune!”
“Congratulations, you have drawn a Hellhound Puppy (purple). Would you like it teleported to you?”
“Woohoo!”
Lekang let out a strange cry—this draw was truly fortunate! His lowest expectation had been to avoid the “maybe next time” consolation, but he had actually snagged something good: the Hellhound, a famous fierce beast! Three heads howling—wouldn’t that terrify anyone?
“Send it over!” Lekang could hardly wait to see the result.
“Arranging delivery for you. Please receive in five seconds.”
“5…4…3…2…1.”
When the countdown finished, the floor before him suddenly opened with a six-pointed star array; intersecting lines and dazzling light shone so bright he could barely open his eyes. When the brilliance faded, a box was left behind.
Lekang curiously approached and opened the not-so-large box. Then, with a strange expression, he pinched the scruff of the so-called epic Hellhound puppy and lifted it up.
“Where are your other two heads?”
He looked left and right; the creature before him was clearly only a month or two old, with three tufts of flame atop its head. In the human world, it had a name both beloved and dreaded: “Husky.”
“Aw aw aw!”
The so-called hellish beast, eyes still unopened, clumsily pawed at him with infant fury.
Lekang slapped his own face.
He strongly protested—the product did not match the description! Where was the three-headed, blue-fire-breathing hellhound? Now he had a tiny husky that hadn’t even opened its eyes and could only flail about?
Lekang felt a palpable disappointment. If the Scroll Spirit hadn’t sworn this was a rare species card, he would have doubted everything.
But since it was here, he couldn’t let the little thing go hungry.
Lekang didn’t keep dogs, so he had nothing suitable to feed it. He found a nearby pet shop, drove over, and consulted the pet doctor. The doctor examined the puppy, praising its fine form and robust health, assuring him that this breed enjoyed all foods.
While Lekang listened to the staff promote dog food, he looked away for just a few minutes. When he turned back, the little husky was already gnawing vigorously at the iron cage, trying to get out. The door beside it wasn’t even closed; one paw was already stretching outside!
The staff laughed and said it was adorable.
Lekang thought, if nothing else, this creature’s pedigree must be royal—extra pure!
“If you have any questions about raising it in the future, feel free to call,” the staff told him.
“Thanks!” Lekang carried the little husky home, set down the cage, found it a bowl, poured some dog food, soaked it with milk, and was interrupted by Mike’s call. Tilting his head, he answered as he fed the puppy:
“Hey, Mike! How’s it going today?”
“‘Beautiful’ doesn’t even begin to describe it, buddy—you know you’re famous now? Everyone’s talking about your magic, marveling at your wonders. You’re the talk of the internet!”
Lekang was unsurprised. “I’m confident in my performance.”
“Yeah, yeah, you told me from the start. You’re so calm now it’s not even normal—damn it, you should be shouting for joy! We’re about to make it big!”
Mike was bubbling with excitement, and Lekang laughed along with him.
Thanks to the talent show’s exposure, Lekang had become a sensation overnight. His follower count on various social platforms soared, with more than a hundred thousand on Twitter alone.
And this was only the beginning. The company behind him, LAA, had high hopes, strategizing to maintain his momentum and build his image from every angle.
Mike believed the current priority was to establish his name, so he needed several stellar performances. He was already in contact with theaters in Los Angeles.
“From now on, those bars and restaurants aren’t worthy of your stage. Future star, you should perform grandly in big theaters and open-air venues!”
“Your audience should number in the thousands, traveling from afar to witness your magic and marvel at your wonders! So forget the money for now—make sure your name resounds!”
Listening to Mike’s lengthy reasoning, Lekang had no concrete plans. With someone managing his resources, life was much easier. “I’ll work up some new tricks soon—enough to stun the crowd. Any stage, I can handle.”
“OK, that’s what I wanted to hear. Trust me, I’ll find you the best!”
Even over the phone, Mike’s eagerness to discover treasure was palpable. Perhaps he’d found the joy of accomplishment, or perhaps he’d signed a truly promising talent.
Lekang found himself quite satisfied with the company so far—their work was meticulous. Just this wave of publicity alone would have been impossible for him to manage solo!
For example, uploading videos through famous influencers and orchestrating the buzz required a whole team and sophisticated operations. Combined with his own high-quality content—boom, instant fame!
