Chapter 120: I, By Luck
The reason the Fang family dared to act lawlessly in Jin Hai was undoubtedly because they had a powerful backer supporting them; otherwise, they would have long since been carved up by the major factions.
The unsightly man before Bai Jing, whose face was tightly drawn with tension, was none other than Fang Ming, the third-in-command of the Fang family in Jin Hai and director of the West District Branch. Now, he brazenly crossed into Tianchen District to conduct an investigation without any sign of Director Wang Ergou. It was clear from the start that he hadn’t given any prior notice—he had parachuted in with the intent to make arrests, specifically targeting Baifu Commercial Building. Coupled with the morning’s incident, it was almost impossible for Bai Jing not to be enraged.
One wave of retaliation after another—the Fang family’s counterattacks were ruthless. They were intent on wiping out the Bai family completely.
As Bai Jing voiced her cold skepticism, Director Fang Ming showed no concern. He reached into his pocket, pulling out a crumpled white sheet of paper which he unfolded and presented to her with a smug flourish. His lustful eyes shamelessly roamed over Bai Jing, lingering for a long moment on her ample, delicate bosom, even offering a lewd appraisal with evident admiration.
Flirting was a vice of his, especially after gaining some power in Jin Hai and with his family backing him up. His arrogance knew no bounds. Naturally lustful, he now used his authority to engage in all sorts of petty misdeeds—drinking, gambling, and other vices were all part of his routine.
Having some understanding of the man’s character, Bai Jing refrained from immediately exploding in fury, but her unfriendly gaze clearly showed she held no affection for the man before her.
Reluctantly, Bai Jing leaned in to inspect the crumpled paper—it was a warrant, more precisely an arrest warrant. However, the targets of the arrest surprised her—not herself, but the five biological experts who had painstakingly researched the “Beauty Perfect Capsule” for some time. This revelation unsettled her deeply.
Arresting the five experts? Bai Jing’s expression darkened. Those five experts were the absolute secret of Baifu Pharmaceuticals, one so closely guarded that even some senior executives in Baifu Pharmaceutical were unaware of their existence. How had the Fang family obtained such detailed information, knowing names and ages without error? Her face grew even grimmer. What were the Fang family’s intentions? What conspiracy lay beneath?
Before Bai Jing could question him, Fang Ming, showing a hint of insight, stepped forward and magnanimously explained to the beautiful woman before him. Yet the explanation was absurd.
“Someone reported that your expert group is developing illegal biochemical agents.”
“What?” Bai Jing’s eyes widened, bloodshot with fury. A blazing fire of anger rose within her—how dare this scoundrel accuse the Bai family of such a crime. She cursed silently; this bastard was beyond the pale, slapping such a heavy accusation on them without cause.
Biochemical agents? As if their small team of experts could produce such things. And even if they had the capacity, why on earth would the Bai family want to?
“Defamation,” the word flashed instantly in Bai Jing’s mind. She demanded angrily, “You say someone reported us for researching biochemical agents? Are you sure your head isn’t stuck in a door or hit by a donkey? To come up with such a ridiculous excuse, you truly have no shame.”
“Yep, someone reported it. Oh, and that ‘Beauty Perfect Capsule’—that’s the biochemical agent,” Fang Ming said with an infuriatingly smug grin, refusing to drop the matter. Lin Yang, standing nearby, watched, barely restraining the urge to step forward and trample the insolent man.
Thinking to himself, “That bastard has such nerve, slandering an ancient formula with this shameless label—biochemical agent? If ‘Beauty Perfect’ is a biochemical agent, then every cosmetic product would be one! What nonsense.”
It was slanderous, yet the Fang family was indeed making such accusations.
Noticing Bai Jing’s stunned expression, Lin Yang stepped forward to take a closer look. But the uncooperative, cunning scoundrel pulled back the paper, crumpling it again before stuffing it back into his pocket. Then, with a swagger, he shoved Bai Jing aside and strode toward the elevator, preparing to carry out the arrests as routine procedure.
Suddenly, a hand shot out, resting firmly on Fang Ming’s left shoulder. No matter how hard he struggled, he couldn’t shake off the grip—though it seemed weak, it held like a steel clamp.
“Kid, take your filthy hand off me,” Fang Ming snapped, turning to glare at the owner of the hand. His face darkened terrifyingly as he spat angrily, utterly lacking any sense of decorum. He tried to swipe away the hand that pinned him down.
“Uh, sorry, my hands are clean. Really, look—they’re spotless. I washed with hand sanitizer, detergent, and even soap. See? They’re shining,” Lin Yang said with a mischievous grin, clearly teasing the arrogant man.
In his heart, Lin Yang smugly thought, “Uncle, you’re no match for me. I’m going to have fun provoking you and won’t let you get the better of me.”
Fang Ming’s temper flared visibly. His eyes filled with bloodshot rage, his cheeks puffed out in anger, his face turning a deep red. He was on the verge of exploding.
But Lin Yang wasn’t about to stop. He grinned and continued: “Hey, Director, what’s wrong? Your face is all red. Ate too many chili peppers? That’s bad for you—can cause hemorrhoids.”
“…” Fang Ming was speechless. His clenched fists creaked. He admitted he had the urge to beat the brat standing before him.
“Relax, relax. You’re getting older; getting angry easily isn’t good for your health, especially your kidneys. If you get sick, your wife will blame you. And if she runs off with someone else, that’s on me. Hey, why are you puffing your beard?” Lin Yang kept up the teasing.
“…” Fang Ming’s eyes widened further. He now had the impulse to draw his gun from its holster and shoot the brat dead on the spot.
“Forget it, I won’t waste my breath on you—you’re as dull as a block of wood, no fun at all,” Lin Yang rolled his eyes and pouted, playing up his role.
“Kid, if you don’t let go, you’ll suffer the consequences.” After enduring the verbal assault, Fang Ming’s fury finally erupted. He swiftly drew his handgun from his waist, the black barrel aimed straight at Lin Yang’s head as he roared.
Spittle flew as Fang Ming shouted, nearly suffocating Lin Yang with the spray.
“Uh, sure, sure. Officer, calm down, calm down. And you really shouldn’t be pointing the gun at someone’s head—it might accidentally go off,” Lin Yang said with a wicked smile. Just as Fang Ming’s terrifying expression softened slightly, Lin Yang suddenly sprang into action, hoisting the arrogant man like a chicken and executing a perfect shoulder throw. Fang Ming’s hefty frame arced gracefully through the air before crashing heavily onto the tiled floor of the lobby, the impact echoing dully.
A sharp, piercing scream followed—a pitch high enough to rival a soprano’s. Fang Ming leapt up, clutching his nearly shattered backside in an attempt to ease the pain. He glared at the innocent-looking Lin Yang and roared, “Kid, you’re asking for death! Not only are you obstructing official business, you’re assaulting an officer! Someone, seize this brat!”
At Fang Ming’s furious command, the other officers in the lobby drew their handcuffs, their faces twisted into snarls as they swarmed toward Lin Yang like a swarm of hornets. Some even brandished their batons, ready to use force without hesitation if Lin Yang resisted.
Just as Lin Yang prepared to boldly take on the officers despite the grave charge of assaulting a police officer, Bai Jing quickly stepped forward and grabbed him by the arm, shaking her head to signal him to relent. After all, with a search warrant in hand, reckless behavior would only provide the Fang family with ammunition, which would be highly disadvantageous for the Bai family. She pulled Lin Yang aside, leaving enough room for the officers to enter the elevator. If they wanted to search, let them.
“Hmph, kid, consider yourself lucky this time. But we’ll settle our scores another day,” Bai Jing said as she made way. This was unexpected for Fang Ming, who had assumed Bai Jing would be the biggest obstacle. His carefully laid plans were thwarted, rendering them useless. Still, he was pleased to see the operation proceeding smoothly. Despite Lin Yang’s earlier rude behavior, Bai Jing’s intervention temporarily quelled the matter. Fang Ming, however, still glared coldly at Bai Jing, sneering, “Hmph, you’d better be sensible, or else…”
Or else what? Lin Yang shot a murderous glare at the arrogant Fang Ming, mockingly punching the air in his direction as a show of defiance. Surprisingly, Fang Ming ignored the gesture and strode into the elevator.
Watching the group swagger into the elevator, Lin Yang ground his teeth in fury. Arresting the five experts? He had hoped to have them help him research alternatives for the Fire Ganoderma. But as Bai Jing said, with an arrest warrant, he couldn’t afford to be reckless.
With no one to block them, the arrests were easier. Before long, the five experts clad in white lab coats, each handcuffed, were forcibly escorted out and shoved into the police vehicle under the watchful eyes of two officers.
“Jing Jie, are we just going to stand here like fools?” Lin Yang asked Bai Jing in bewilderment. The value of the five experts was incalculable. The Fang family’s move now was an attempt to cut off the source completely.
