Chapter Forty-Six: The Demon Approaches
Zhu Yan and his companions felt immense relief; their journey had been free from mishap. Before dawn broke, they reached the Infinite City safely.
The sheer scale of the Infinite City left the group of a dozen or so in disbelief. Only when the bone staircase extended down from the city did they finally come to their senses.
Wang Xiao had been waiting for them atop the Infinite City, having learned last night of the attack on Giant Tiger City. The distance had been too great; even at full speed, they could not have arrived in time.
“Go, tell the kitchen to bring out the food we’ve prepared,” Wang Xiao ordered.
Zhu Yan and the others were dusty and fatigued, their faces marked by sorrow.
“From now on, the Infinite City will be your home,” Wang Xiao said, placing a firm hand on Zhu Yan’s shoulder.
Zhu Yan’s voice trembled as he spoke. “Do you understand? They fell one by one before my eyes, and yet I had no power to slay those monsters.”
Tears streamed uncontrollably, falling to the ground. The sorrow spread, and all on the Infinite City fell silent.
“The dead are gone, the living must carry on. We will avenge them,” said Yang Ming, who was usually taciturn, surprising everyone with his words of comfort.
Zhu Yan and his companions did not eat; all they wanted was solitude.
Night descended once more.
After replenishing a little energy, their complexions improved. In the hall, Zhu Yan recounted in detail all that had transpired in Giant Tiger City.
Those present lapsed into silence.
A mere dozen “demons” had destroyed a city of a thousand souls.
And these “demons” were only at the third tier.
Their nearly immortal abilities inspired despair.
Wang Xiao looked around and said, “Let’s hear your opinions.”
Xia Mengsi stood, her expression grave. “This will be a hard battle. Yesterday, I counted—there are fewer than thirty people in the city who possess soul attacks.”
“Among them, five are fourth tier, three are second tier, the rest are third tier.”
Aike shook his head with a bitter smile. “Soul damage at the fourth tier can’t harm fifth-tier ‘demons’ at all.”
Wang Xiao smiled. “Don’t worry, everyone. Leave the fifth-tier ‘demons’ to me.”
“I also possess soul-attack skills,” Ji Weijie spoke up. “I’ve recently developed some new weapons which may be effective.”
Wang Xiao’s eyes lit up. “Tell us.”
Ji Weijie spoke with pride. “Soul attacks—are they not essentially mental attacks?”
No one disagreed, so he continued. “So I used the skulls of monsters with high mental strength to create some special weapons.”
He produced a bullet.
A full-metal casing, indistinguishable from an ordinary bullet. He gently squeezed it, shattering the tip, and white powder spilled out.
“When fired into the body, this bullet explodes, scattering the white powder as it detonates.”
“This powder isn’t poisonous, but it causes mental harm.”
Yang Ming raised a practical question. “But how do you get it inside the ‘demons’? Regular firearms work on tier-two and below, but beyond that, they’re useless.”
Ji Weijie smiled mysteriously. “That brings me to my second new weapon.”
He revealed a strangely shaped device, somewhat resembling a syringe, but with a thumb-sized needle tip.
“This is the bullet launcher—can load five bullets at once.”
Wang Xiao examined it, asking, “How does it work? Do you inject the ‘demons’?”
Ji Weijie laughed heartily. “Precisely! You inject the ‘demons’. The weapon contains a miniature jumping device.”
“It can transmit the bullet into the ‘demon’s body, but there’s a fatal flaw: the tip must be pressed directly against the ‘demon’s skin.”
“Otherwise, the distance is too great to deliver the bullet.”
Aike responded, “It’s fine. With our skills, we can get close. As long as there’s a way to kill them!”
Almost as if summoned by their words, the guards outside spotted hundreds of mysterious dark shadows approaching.
Undoubtedly, these were the “demons.”
The Infinite City immediately entered battle readiness, all combatants gathering atop the city walls.
“Shall we retreat or fight?” Xia Mengsi asked.
Wang Xiao sighed. “Retreat? With Little Bone’s speed, would we get away?”
Xia Mengsi sighed as well. “Indeed, these ‘demons’ are swift. Looks like we have no choice but to fight.”
Wang Xiao ordered Little Bone to activate the protective shield, preventing any “demons” from sneaking aboard the Infinite City.
Little Bone’s shield could withstand fourth-tier attacks—these third-tier “demons” would not break through.
With a wave of Wang Xiao’s hand, the Dark Knights of the Infinite City appeared!
This knight order now numbered five hundred, each a third-tier warrior.
Wang Xiao decided to let the Dark Knights test the waters first.
A mass of Dark Knights leapt from the city, raising clouds of dust.
Under the moonlight, two black-clad forces collided!
The Dark Knights swung their greatswords, while the “demons” fought fiercely, matching injury for injury, life for life.
The battle began with overwhelming advantage, but soon they were forced to retreat.
Wang Xiao knew it was time. From his observations, these “demons” were indeed all third tier.
Wang Xiao charged ahead. “Fourth-tier brothers, follow me!”
Wang Xiao, skilled in soul attacks, did not carry Ji Weijie’s weapons.
The others did.
Excited, they shouted, as if celebrating.
Black flames burst from Wang Xiao’s body; with a flying kick, a “demon’s” head was severed from its body.
The black flames did not spare the head or body, lingering and burning until nothing remained but ash.
Seeing this, the others were fired up, especially Zhu Yan, who fought with the greatest fervor.
He wielded his blade with fierce skill, and the “demons” around him dared not approach.
Those atop the Infinite City cheered, encouraging the warriors below.
Aidar wept with joy, never imagining he would live to witness such a sight—his life had not been in vain!
Wang Xiao was also caught up in the exhilaration, for he noticed a new tattoo forming, appearing within his eye.
At first, it encircled his pupil, but as the number of slain “demons” grew, the fine lines became ever more intricate.
Elegant and mysterious!
In the end, the last “demon” knelt before Wang Xiao.
It buried its head deep into the ground, unable to lift it, trembling in terror as if confronted by its nemesis. Wang Xiao paid it little mind.
With a casual toss, the black flame in his hand engulfed it.
